Today my heart is full and I am overwhelmed with emotions. Water is flowing in Lahuriya deh (लहुरियादह) and through my eyes and the eyes of people there.
Even after 75 years of Independence, people of Lahuria Deh village, Mirzapur did not have access to water! Situated on a hilltop on the border of UP-MP, the topography made any attempts to get water there 'impossible'. When I went there for the first time, I did not have the heart to drink water from my water bottle in front of the villagers. Aadhar cards were used to issue water through tankers. People did not marry their daughters to this village.
But yesterday, that changed. After dedicated work of 9 months, our team beat the challenges of geography, finances and other logistics achieving what people said was impossible. Today through the 'Har Ghar Jal' scheme piped connections to supply clean, safe water directly to every home in the village was started.
As the tap was turned on for the first time today, tears of joy streamed down almost every face we saw. The village is celebrating and rejoicing. We are celebrating and rejoicing. Our hard work paid off. Our efforts made a difference. We brought life and health to hundreds of families today.
Days like today make all the struggle worth it. Seeing lives changed so dramatically with such a basic necessity makes me believe that we can accomplish great things when we work together.
Together, we can make a difference and Together, we will!
Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!
Watched Nolan’s Odyssey yesterday.
Saw possibly the world's first commitment device:
Odysseus gets himself tied to the mast because he knew the Sirens’ song would be too beautiful to resist.
The strongest man on the ship didn’t trust his willpower.
He trusted his systems.
We think disciplined people resist temptation better.
They don’t.
They just design their lives so the temptation never gets a vote.
1. Phone in another room while studying
2. Money auto-invested before you see it.
3. Don't keep unhealthy food in fridge if you want to avoid it
4. Link small activities with daily chores - like 5 sit-ups before bathing
Don’t fight the Sirens.
Tie yourself to the mast.
From reading your inspiring quotes on X to finally holding and reading your book—it's been quite a journey. Looking forward to learn from your experiences and insights ma’am. @divyamittal_IAS
💧 "People did not marry their daughters into this village."
That was the first thing IAS officer Divya Mittal heard about Lahuria Deh.
Years later, she remembers the same village for a very different reason—it became one of the most meaningful chapters of her career. 🇮🇳❤️
In an emotional LinkedIn post, the 2013-batch Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer reflected on her tenure as District Magistrate of Mirzapur and the mission that transformed a village many had given up on.
🏡 Lahuria Deh wasn't just remote—it had lived 75 years after Independence without a single tap water connection.
🚱 Nearly 1,500 residents, mostly from Dalit families, survived on water tankers. Every drop was rationed through Aadhaar cards. Women walked kilometres over rocky terrain carrying water home, while the Gram Sabha remained trapped in debt just to pay for tanker supplies.
📂 Government records had labelled the village an "IMPOSSIBLE CASE." The terrain was too steep. The project was considered financially unviable. Previous attempts had ended with surveys, files and no solution.
💪 But Divya Mittal and her team refused to accept that verdict.
⚙️ Engineers from Jal Nigam redesigned the lift water supply system, and the project was personally reviewed on-site every week.
✨ Just nine months later, water finally flowed through taps in 125 homes—for the first time in 75 years.
💙 "An old woman held my hand and cried," Divya Mittal recalled, describing one of the most emotional moments of her administrative journey.
🌟 Her biggest takeaway captures the true spirit of public service:
"Impossible is rarely an engineering verdict. It's usually an ownership verdict."
👏 A powerful reminder that committed leadership, persistence and compassionate governance can turn the most "impossible" dreams into reality.
