“The bill will definitely come back, there’s no two ways about it. This is not an issue that’s going away.” Kim Leadbeater, talking today about forcing her assisted dying bill through Parliament in the next session.

I see that the government conversion practices draft bill wants to criminalise “conduct causing someone to believe that they ... do not have a transgender identity”. I know for fact my book Material Girls did this for hundreds of young people, cos they told me.
I mean... the idea that equality demands we have law prohibiting conversion therapy for gay/trans people AND for straight people is so funny (and why is Stonewall celebrating this; shouldn't they be worried?).
I also see they want to criminalise conduct causing someone to believe that they DO have a transgender identity. I look forward to sharing a cell with thousands of youtube influencers.

Why Britain needs code-switchers, by Kathleen Stock (@docstockk)
Everyone knows there are certain things in life that politicians should never own two of: large houses, romantic partners, bean-to-cup coffee machines. To this list it seems we can now add regional accents.
Old videos have emerged of the SNP MP Lara Bird talking in pure Received Pronunciation, comically contrasting with the gently rolling Rs heard in the Commons as she took her parliamentary oath this week.
Though the former PhD student also performatively crossed her fingers while feigning allegiance to the King, the press seemed to think that having a geographically wandering accent was the more outrageous pretence.

@overlandertheb1@unherd@billykayscot That sounds fascinating. A deeply nerdy point that didn't make it into the piece was that in my small home town, the Doric meets Central Scots, and half the town say fit/fa and the other say whit/whaur, and some say both (aka the true code switchers).

“The Netherlands bears a special responsibility. It developed and legitimized a pathway to radical, partly irreversible medical treatments for minors. Anyone who introduces such a treatment model to the world must also provide the accompanying evidence. If that evidence proves insufficient after thirty years, the burden of uncertainty must not be placed on the child”

Tonight on Channel 4 a documentary about the case of Stacey Hyde - a seventeen year old who killed a violent man who was attacking her in self defence but was convicted of murder - i acted as her lawyer at her criminal appeal and am interviewed for the doc worth a watch...
@GretaSc93741191 How do you know it's cynical rather than practical? She has to pick one; assuming she uses both, why would she pick the English one to talk to Arbroath people?
Probably annoying qualification on Lara Bird accent thing - I've dual accent like this, my parents are English, I was raised about twelve miles from her constituency, you couldn't speak like I do now/my parents do without attracting negative attention at school, so from very young age I split my accent; not even consciously, it was just what I did.
And if that isn't good enough evidence, consider the singer Lulu - by own account sounded Glaswegian at home and totally English down South. Most people code switch a bit with accents, but in some cases it can be more extreme without being deliberate or fake.
In other words: have a go at this woman for her pretentious student politics by all means but the accent thing may well be legit.
I asked SNP for comment on this. They said
"Lara Bird MP is half-Scottish, half-English. She grew up in Scotland and has also lived in England. Unlike Nigel Farage's Reform Party, the SNP doesn't judge people on their accents or where they come from. Nor do the people of Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, who elected Lara Bird MP with a majority of 5278 votes, while the Reform Party trailed behind in a distant third place."
@Nicnackery Yes, I have this problem also, again probably because accents were such a thing in my early life. People really do think you are taking the piss!
