OVARIAN TORSION
Ovarian torsion is a medical emergency where one of your ovaries twists on the tissues supporting it.
Ovarian torsion happens when something upsets the balance that allows your ovary to stay in place. A growth, like an ovarian cyst (especially a large one), can add extra weight to your ovary, causing it to shift or twist on the ligament holding it. Although it’s less common, cancerous tumors or other solid masses on your ovary can shift the weight, too, and cause torsion.
What triggers ovarian torsion?
Sometimes, your body’s physical movements can trigger ovarian torsion symptoms. Some people experience symptoms after intercourse or being physically active.
Still, ovarian torsion doesn’t require a trigger event to happen.
It can sometimes occur on its own.

This is why an early pregnancy/anomaly ultrasound scan is important for expectant mothers to allow doctors spot structural issues that might otherwise go completely unnoticed
A prime example of what these scans look for is a cystic hygroma...
A cystic hygroma is a congenital anomaly where the lymphatic system fails to properly connect with the venous system, causing fluid-filled spaces to form primarily in the neck or armpit areas of a developing fetus
These malformations are highly significant because roughly 65% of cases are associated with genetic conditions, most commonly Turner syndrome and Down syndrome, as well as major structural issues like congenital heart defects

Do you really know which structures are essential in the evaluation of agenesis of the septi pellucidi? Most of you pointed to the corpus callosum… but what if the real clue was hiding somewhere else?
The structure that actually solves this case is the optic chiasm—and Elisenda Eixarch shows exactly why in the ultrasound images.
We clearly see:
✅ Communicating anterior horns
✅ Cavum septi pellucidi with partial agenesis of the septi
✅ Normal corpus callosum
✅ Normal orientation of the anterior horns
➡️ When we identify a partial agenesis of the septi pellucidi, the key question is always:
• Is it isolated? — usually benign
• Or is it septo-optic dysplasia? — a different scenario entirely
And to distinguish them is essential to evaluate the optic chiasm.
