But: “Which strategy is more efficient—and why?”
This Math Talk Card gets students comparing two correct approaches, discussing counting on from the larger number, and building the flexibility and efficiency that real fluency requires.
Correct is important. Efficient, strategic thinking is the goal.

Universal Design for Learning functions like accommodations—but the support is offered to everyone from the start.

When we identify an accommodation for one student, our next question should be: Could this support help any other students we have?

Usually, the answer is yes.

Options like text-to-speech, visual directions, options for movement, graphic organizers, extended time, models, checklists, and different ways to show learning may be absolutely necessary for one student. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t also helpful for others.

If a support removes a barrier without changing the learning goal, why reserve it for only the students with documentation?

Of course, UDL doesn’t replace individualized accommodations. Some students require specific supports and the documentation that gives them the right to those. But this does not preclude us from supporting other students who don't qualify for and IEP/ILP.

Neither accommodations nor UDL lower the bar.

High expectations. No barriers.
