In Science, researchers report evidence of the bouba–kiki effect in newly hatched domestic chicks. Even without linguistic exposure, chicks matched sharp sounds with spiky shapes and softer sounds with rounded shapes.

The findings suggest that cross-modal associations between sound and shape may rely on predisposed neural mechanisms shared across species.

Language may not have invented these patterns. It may have inherited them.
