Following the historic milestone in the EU-Philippines Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations on 22 September, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), in collaboration with the South-East Asia IP SME Helpdesk, convened key stakeholders for the “𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗜𝗣 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗜𝗣 𝗘𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨-𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁” to explore what the evolving trade deal means for Intellectual Property rights and European SMEs.

The forum examined how the #Philippines is responding to global IP developments, ranging from digital piracy and online counterfeiting to geographical indications (GIs), and how European businesses can align their IP strategies with both EU standards and Philippine legal reforms.

Industry experts including Atty. Edmund Jason Baranda, Managing Partner of Baranda and Associates – Rouse & Co. International Limited and External Expert of the South-East Asia IP SME Helpdesk, alongside Hon. Teodoro C. Pascua, Director General of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), emphasized that while the FTA opens new doors, strong IP strategies and evidence-gathering are essential for businesses to navigate the digital age and capitalize on new market opportunities.

The nation currently struggles with gridlocked land corridors and overcapacity air hubs, continuing to lag behind several of its ASEAN neighbors in essential transport infrastructure indicators. 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗: Philippines seals free trade deal with EU; European chamber welcomes agreement

The European Union and the Philippines have concluded negotiations for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA), officials announced Tuesday, setting the stage for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to formally sign the landmark deal in Manila.

"The mutually beneficial agreement should bring tangible benefits, including new opportunities for businesses, more investment and more jobs," according to the joint statement of the EU and the Philippines. [...]

The European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines also welcomed the free trade deal.

ECCP President Dr. Diana Edralin, MD, DPCOM hailed the pact as a "world-class framework" and urged lawmakers in Manila and Brussels to expedite domestic ratification.

ECCP Executive Director Florian Gottein added that the agreement grants local exporters preferential access to a European market of nearly 450 million consumers while providing crucial long-term supply chain stability.

The discussion centered on how a majority of firms are actively shifting supply chains with artificial intelligence and technology serving as top growth drivers.

The panel evaluated the Philippines' current strengths such as its skilled talent and tech-enabled services alongside the need to modernize infrastructure to align with regional growth. To accelerate competitiveness, the session highlighted the implementation of a "super-one-stop-shop" investment framework. Additionally, participants explored how mega-FTAs will force vital domestic reforms like easing investment caps and cutting red tape. Finally, the panel concluded with an ambitious, outside-the-box risk: establishing radical regulatory sandboxing to position the Philippines as the region's premier testing ground for future-forward digital and green trade.

𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗: Malnutrition costs PHL $8.5 billion yearly — World Bank advisor

Malnutrition costs the Philippine economy about $8.5 billion (P534.1 billion), equivalent to 3% of gross domestic product (GDP), each year, underscoring the economic case for greater investment in nutrition, according to a World Bank advisor.

World Bank Senior Nutrition Advisor Cecilia Santos-Acuin said the cost of poor nutrition goes beyond individual health, affecting productivity, human capital and the country’s long-term economic development.

“Malnutrition alone costs us about $8.5 billion, or 3% of our GDP per year,” Ms. Santos-Acuin said during the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines’ (ECCP) fifth annual Nutrition Forum on Wednesday.
