August 15, 2025 marks four years since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan. This series archives the trauma and resistance of women in Afghanistan who have endured psychological, social and legal oppression under gender apartheid.
See their art below⬇️
🗣️"The Taliban’s oppression of women is not incidental, but central to their model of governance: they have created a system of total control."
EGA's @Metra_Mehran briefed the #UNSC, highlighting the importance of recognizing the Taliban's system of control as gender apartheid.
"The women and girls of Afghanistan cannot afford international inaction."
@Metra_Mehran underscores that the women of #Afghanistan are pursuing every available pathway to hold the Taliban accountable.
‼️Over the past three years, EGA and our partners have been relentlessly advocating for the inclusion of gender apartheid in the crimes against humanity treaty.
🎉Today, 7 states, including Afghanistan, Australia, Iceland, Mexico, Spain, Timor-Leste, and Uruguay have formally proposed the inclusion of gender apartheid in the crimes against humanity treaty.

In recent weeks, EGA team and partners have met with policymakers across the globe to brief them on the Taliban’s system of #genderapartheid and the need for codification.

EGA team members Azadah Raz Mohammad and @Metra_Mehran spoke at #ASIL2026, where they each discussed how codification of gender apartheid could serve as a viable path towards justice and accountability
Today, @JohnSwinney stood with @Malala in support of our Afghan partners to back the campaign to recognise gender apartheid as a crime under international law — a demand Afghan women and girls have been making for years.
A government putting its weight behind a legal framework that names what the Taliban is doing for what it is. That is what accountability looks like.
Every country that joins this call makes it harder for the world to look away. Thank you, Scotland.

On 21 April, we mark the birthday of Narges Mohammadi, who turns 54 today, while spending her 130th day back in prison for her peaceful activism.
Born on 21 April 1972, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate has dedicated her life to the fight for democracy, freedom, and women’s rights in Iran.
For her commitment, she has been arrested 14 times, prosecuted in 10 cases, and sentenced to a total of 44 years in prison. She has already spent over a decade behind bars and still faces many more years. She has endured at least 161 days in solitary confinement under what is known as “white torture.” She has not been able to hug her children since 2015. Most recently, she was arrested again on 12 December 2025 and remains imprisoned to this day.
On her birthday, we honor her courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice and we hope and fight for her freedom everyday, until she is free.
