Surprise! “different places have different politics.”
“The Democrats’ moderate wing is not going extinct any time soon…The modern Democratic Party, by virtue of its class and ethnic diversity, has always been ideologically heterodox.”

On JD Vance’s second book: “If he did a trilogy, the third volume would be about how he burned one bridge after another. Because…one of the striking things about him is this constant reinvention.”
Will the Real JD Vance Please Stand Up?
It’s very hard to read his new book without thinking it’s a construction. Which parts are mostly constructed and which are authentically him?
Appreciated this conversation with @mcottle & @CarlosNYT

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales.
Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37.
They’ve only looked strong because Labour has been weak.
“He’s just optimistic and happy and seems to enjoy being a politician.”
Confess I like politicians who are like that.
Quote from a very good profile of Andy Burnham, by @_StephenCastle that also wisely cites the great political scientist @robfordmancs.

Makerfield result:
A swing back to governing party in a by-election is exceptional.
Winning absolute majority of vote in a seat with Reform friendly demographics is exceptional.
Doing both on increased turnout when yr party is polling under 20% is truly exceptional
#HappyJuneteenth!
It “celebrates a victory that’s never full won,” @ed_kilgore writes in this good historical examination of progress, retreat — and progress again. We should use the day to keep hope alive.

Andy Burnham’s margin here is huge, given where #Makerfield was trending. He seems to thread the needle Labour needs to thread, winning back both working class voters trending right and left-leaning voters the party was shedding. It sure feels like he is the next Prime Minister.
Starmer is caught in two tensions facing the center-left broadly: (1) promises for both fiscal prudence and enhanced public programs; (2) the threat of rightward defections among working-class voters & losses leftward among metropolitan voters. As PM, Burnham would face them, too
Leading into today’s hugely consequential #Makerfield by-election in Britain, I examined the year’s key European elections, including the defeat of Victor Orban in Hungary, and the lessons they offer the US & other democracies.

Good @EJDionne piece laying out how the moral and spiritual rot of Trumpism is giving Democrats an opening to run on an updated values-based, anti-Trump, anti-MAGA politics:

It tells us all a lot about Donald Trump that he’s conflating the 250th anniversary of our country’s promise of equality & freedom with his 80th birthday — and UFC.
Appreciated this @nytopinion chat with Robert Siegel & @Peter_Wehner. Check it out.

Republicans have long claimed a monopoly on “values” issues. But this year, we’re witnessing a renewal of our tradition of moral engagement with our common life, the economy, social justice, technological revolution — and what we owe each other.

The inflation rate in Biden's last month in office was 2.9%. Trump (supported by a Republican Congress) has driven it up to 4.2%.
Thank you, voters, for your attention to this matter.

The Voting Rights jurisprudence of the Supreme Court’s Republican majority “has produced a system impenetrably rigged against the voters that the law was supposed to protect.”
Very good piece by @RuthMarcus@NewYorker

More than a few people who were barking this morning that California Dems had rigged the election against Pratt are currently congratulating Steve Hilton on making the gubernatorial runoff without any recognition that these two things don't compute
