If one really wishes to know how justice is administered in a country, one does not question the policeman, the lawyers, the judges, or the protected members of the middle class. One goes to the unprotected - those, precisely, who need the law’s protection the most! - and listens to their testimony. Ask any Mexican, any Puerto Rican, any black man, any poor person - ask the wretched how they fare in the halls of #justice, and then you will know, not whether or not the country is just, but whether or not it has any love for justice, or any concept of it.

— Remembering Katrina —
i still hear her name
like a hymn hummed under breath,
like mama’s hands shaking a tambourine
while the water kept rising.

streets turned to seas,
and we learned how to pray
with our lips pressed against rooftops,
calling God by every name we knew.

they said “natural disaster”
like it wasn’t levees breaking
under the weight of neglected promises,
like it wasn’t Black bodies stranded
in a country that claimed to love them.

we carried our dead in memory
and our living in plastic bags,
we stitched our faith
from wet photographs and missing names,
built new songs out of sirens
and screams no one came to answer.

and still—
we remember how the sun returned,
how brass horns rose from broken porches,
how a second line led us back to breath,
how we danced barefoot in borrowed streets,
telling the world we are here,
we are always here,
we are more than their forgetting.

Katrina tried to drown us,
but couldn’t.
America tried to erase us,
but didn’t.
and the river,
still swollen with memory,
carries our names
like a prayer no one can silence.

stop calling it tragedy

***Where the Breath Still Belongs***
they don’t tell you
that freedom smells like pine needles after rain
like canyon winds whisperin’
names older than flags

they don’t say
the eagle ain’t just a mascot,
but a memory
of what the sky once trusted

they paved stories into parking lots,
but the bison still remember
how the drumbeat felt
before fences told the plains
who could roam and who could not

i seen spirits dance in Yosemite mist
heard children laugh with coyotes on the wind
felt grandmothers rise from the red clay
whenever i knelt to plant a seed

our rivers ain’t just water—
they are sermons
written in ripple,
delivered to thirsty hearts
who forgot what it means to kneel
without conquest in their mouth

this ain’t just conservation
this is resurrection
this is saving the last wild prayer
before it’s replaced with another mall

i walk the sacred
like i walk my grandmother’s name—
careful,
reverent,
knowing
that every step is a thank you
to a world that keeps forgiving us
while we burn it for comfort

& yet—
the deer still dance at dawn
the mountains still hum their lullabies
the earth
still
waits
for us
to remember
we were once
worthy of wonder.

you whispered fire through a fractured tongue—
each syllable a sermon,
each truth a rung
on the ladder we still climb
to outrun
this undone
america.

your pen was prophecy,
bled black
and bold—
told us how cold
freedom walks when her hand is sold.

you gave us verbs that bite back,
nouns that knelt in protest,
and a mirror
to face
our nation’s unconfessed.

now in twenty-five,
they wear masks
called law
while clawing at our rights
like hunger
with no jaw.

but we heard you,
still hear you—
your breath

we build
