Australian law doesn't protect against harm from facial recognition.
Our model law would fill this gap. This is a legal framework for safe & beneficial facial recognition, which protects against harmful uses of this tech.
Australia's Attorney-General should lead this reform👇
As facial recognition is rolled out in shopping centres, workplaces & homes, we’re sleepwalking towards mass surveillance. Our Facial Recognition Model Law Report is a reform roadmap to improve #privacy protections, while enabling positive innovation https://t.co/ZwrakmpPr6

The rollout of #facialrecognition technology is continuing without proper legal guardrails. @esantow spoke to ABC RN's @andy_park about police use of this technology and its implications

Can facial analysis technology veer into the territory of phrenology, the long debunked study of head shapes?
@esantow speaks in this excellent @PRO_Vic podcast which highlights the dangers of using these insights in decision making now and in the past https://t.co/yEIntR8CxX
Today, we were delighted to launch “Improving governance and training for the use of facial verification technology in NSW Digital ID”, a new report authored by Professor @esantow, @sophiefarthing2 and Lauren Perry from @HTI_UTS.
The report is the culmination of a major collaboration between HTI and the NSW Government, supported through a JMI Policy Challenge Grant. It sets out how the Government can use law, governance and training to make its new digital identity system trustworthy.

Being unable to prove your identity is like being a walking ghost: modern life is impossible.
Digital ID promises convenience, better privacy & cost savings. As @sophiefarthing2, @LaurenEWPerry & I explore, this promise will be realised only if we get the guardrails right👇
Digital ID will go mainstream across Australia in 2024.
@esantow + colleagues (@UTSEngage) explain how it can work for everyone.

How can we gain the benefits of digital ID – convenience, efficiency, lower risk of cybercrime – while minimising the attendant risks, such as privacy leaks, data misuse, and reduced trust in government? Read our piece in @ConversationEDU

NSW’s Digital ID aims to make everyday activities like opening a bank account or applying for a licence easier. Our report with @JMI proposes guardrails in law and policy to make sure it’s safe, accountable and trustworthy.

*What must be front of mind for policymakers in Australia when developing digital identity initiatives?*
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of co-hosting a roundtable on digital identity with the @HTI_UTS.
The roundtable convened senior public servants and leading experts from across Australia to tackle pivotal issues in rolling out digital identity initiatives. Our discussions centred on ensuring proper governance and accountability over digital IDs, and the importance of ongoing cooperation across jurisdictions in this rapidly evolving space.
We thank all participants for their invaluable contributions, and particularly our partners at HTI for hosting the roundtable with us. With the backing of a JMI Policy Challenge Grant, the HTI team led by Professor @esantow has developed a governance framework and training strategy to support @ServiceNSW in rolling out a safe, reliable and responsible digital identity system.
Stay tuned for more updates on this project in the coming weeks.

OpenAI is an unusual beast: both commercial & non-profit. Its mission is to build AGI that is safe & beneficial for humanity. Is the crisis at OpenAI a symptom of something bigger? Does it reflect the limits of self-regulation?

The govt is working on a law governing digital ID use. We think it needs stronger privacy protections. This is what HTI Director @esantow said at a Senate hearing about it this week. https://t.co/0ZgzSg6z3G
As Australia +27 other govts signed the #BletchleyDeclaration at the #AISafetySummit, our HTI Director @esantow was interviewed on ABC PM on why AI technologies need to be fair, accurate and accountable.

A must read investigation from @ABCscience about the creeping spread of facial recognition from the US criminal justice system into our own.
As I said to @JamesPurtill, Australia's laws simply don't keep Australians safe. Reform is urgent.
