"In his seminal work Natural Causes: Essays in Ecological Marxism (1998) and earlier articles, James O’Connor introduced the concept of capitalism’s “second contradiction.” The first contradiction is the classic Marxist one: between the forces of production (technology and labor productivity) and the relations of production (capitalist ownership and wage labor), which leads to overproduction and falling rates of profit, as well as an intensified extraction of value from labor.

The second contradiction arises between the forces and relations of production on one hand, and the conditions of production on the other. O’Connor defined these conditions broadly as the natural environment (raw materials, waste absorption capacity, ecosystems); human labor power (its physical, intellectual, and emotional reproduction); and urban and infrastructural space (transport, housing, education systems).

Capitalism treats these conditions as “free gifts” or externalized costs separate from labor itself. Consequently, it systematically degrades them to reduce immediate costs and increase short-term profitability. O’Connor argued that by the late 20th century, the exploitation of nature had begun to rival or even surpass the exploitation of labor as the primary mechanism of profit extraction. Capital increasingly profits not just by squeezing workers but by appropriating, privatizing, and destroying ecological systems."
