In 2008, The Dark Knight was top of the box office, and I was a fresh-faced Energy Secretary.
At that time we talked about an “energy trilemma” between security, affordability, and sustainability.
But now the signs all point in the same direction - the sprint for clean power
Britain has reached £100 billion of private investment in UK clean energy since July 2024.
Investment that is:
✅ Supporting good jobs
✅ Growing the UK’s clean energy economy
✅ Boosting energy security
✅ Delivering our Industrial Strategy

Keir has made an enormous contribution to public service throughout his career, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude.
The Labour Party was elected to change Britain, and we must now redouble our efforts to deliver the bold and credible change that the British people deserve.
Keir Starmer can be immensely proud of his achievements in bringing Labour back to power and leading two years in Government to make Britain a fairer, stronger country.
Today’s statement showed the great dignity and integrity that is the mark of the man.
Too many people have been left in homes damaged by poor work and with no support when things went wrong. We're changing that.
Our new consumer protection system will put consumers first, with better protections and compensation for customers.
Households across Britain are embracing solar power in record numbers 📈☀️
And today some of the UK's biggest retailers have committed to stocking plug-in solar in the coming months, to help more families save on their energy bills.

I’m very sad to hear of the death of Roy Hattersley. He was an egalitarian who cared about ideas. He fought throughout his career for social justice and democracy and against inequality. I will always be personally grateful for his advice and friendship. He will be deeply missed
1/ 🇬🇧🤝🇯🇵 Yesterday in Downing Street with our Japanese counterparts and in close partnership with @GBEgovuk, we announced up to £9bn of investment in the UK’s offshore wind sector.
Backing jobs, strengthening energy security and delivering clean power for 8m homes.
For too long, energy projects were stuck waiting years for grid connections.
Thanks to our reforms more than 700 projects have now been offered connections - delivering clean power, unlocking investment and building the energy system Britain needs.
Getting on with delivery. 👇
Could a community battery cut your bills?
We are already seeing the impact in Hook Norton, where a community battery is helping cut costs and make the most of locally generated energy.
We want to see more of this - putting power back into the hands of local communities.
Energy companies agree to pay to train workers and create green jobs 🌱
Energy workers set for a skills and protections revolution after offshore wind supply chain companies and trade unions sign up to the government’s Fair Work Charter.

Building a more secure energy system should go hand in hand with stronger workers’ rights.
That's why we're introducing a Fair Work Charter, co-designed with the trade unions.
Those who power our country deserve power in their workplace too.

If we want households to benefit from clean power we need a more flexible energy system – and community batteries can help deliver it.
Our proposals aim to give renters and people living in flats the chance to store cheaper renewable electricity and cut their bills 👇
The net zero economy now supports 1.1m UK jobs and generates £105bn in economic value - proof that tackling climate change & growing the economy can go hand in hand.
Carbon Budget 7 laid in Parliament today provides certainty to help unlock more investment and energy security.
Over a million workers are now supported by the net zero economy.
Last year we broke the record for solar generation.
This year we’ve already broken records for offshore wind generation.
That’s what delivering on our clean power mission looks like.
Today @energygovuk published the Government's proposed level for the seventh Carbon Budget, which sets a science-led target of ~8️⃣7️⃣% emissions reduction for the period 2038 to 2042, as endorsed by the Environmental Audit Committee and @theCCCuk.

The announcement coincides with a new report by @CBItweets and @ECIU_UK showing the UK’s net zero economy added £105 billion in value in 2025 and now supports more than one million jobs 🤯
Responding to the latest Carbon Budget, our CEO Tara Singh (@RenewableUKCEO) said:
"Setting clear goals helps us to attract billions in private investment in the UK's world class clean tech industries, creating well-paid jobs throughout the country in wind, solar, energy storage and green hydrogen - our new powerhouses of economic growth.
“The clean power we generate cuts bills by pushing the most expensive gas generators off the system. Low-cost electricity from renewables protects billpayers from price shocks on volatile global fossil fuel markets which we can't control, strengthening the UK's energy security as we move closer towards energy independence".
