Ann Widdecombe and I worked with @SkyNews to cover Pope Benedict XVI’s Papal Visit to the UK, in 2010
On the last of 4 days, we rushed from London to Birmingham for Beatification of John Henry Newman, at Cofton Park.
Security was high and the closest our car could get was over a mile away!
It meant a very long walk.
Ann handled this and the inevitable hurry well clutching her hefty bags. She had been talking about Faith and Roman Catholicism for three days but went as fast as she could.
But her foot caught a lifted paving stone and down she went. I can feel the sound her body made, now, as it landed hard on the slabs: it was a complete face plant.
Staggeringly, though one knee, an elbow and her hands were badly grazed, there was no mark on her face.
We all assumed she would have to withdraw.
She clambered to her feet, swept our concern aside and strode on!
She was a soldier that day. Nothing could have stopped her and I loved seeing the joy in everyone’s eyes, to see her, in our team. She talked to everyone!
I am angry and horrified to contemplate the manner of her death.
While I did not know her well, she earned my respect over those four long but profound days, in the company of Pope Benedict XVI and through her devotion to St John Henry Newman - I hope it was into their receiving arms that she found peace after her ordeal, and that they lift her up to where she needs to go.
