"We're starting to lose sight of what we are trying to do in our courts... we are looking for justice"
Barrister Joanna Hardy-Susskind discusses reform of the justice system in England and Wales on #PoliticsLive

Here is a list of reasons why some of my hearings and trials this year have been delayed and kicked off into the long grass, stuck in our record court backlog. Serious allegations which will now be tried *years* after the event. 🧵👇
Trial by jury is a cornerstone of our democracy and an essential safeguard against authoritarianism.
It is truly frightening that such a fundamental freedom is now under attack.
Once rights are lost, they are not easy to win back. We must resist this with all we’ve got.
The CBA firmly opposes the Government’s proposal to erode the public’s fundamental right to trial by jury.
The erosion of the right to jury trial will break the increasingly thin connection between the State and ordinary people, and risks undermining social cohesion and trust in the criminal justice system. Once that trust disappears, fears of tyrannical governments increase and the faith in justice evaporates for good.

Jury trials are a fundamental part of our democratic settlement. Criminal trials without juries are a bad idea.
The Government need to pull their finger out and acquire empty public buildings across the country to make sure these can happen in a way that is safe.
A 13-year-old rape complainant waiting years for her alleged attacker to go on trial
An accused domestic abuser setting up house with a new girlfriend while on bail
A paedophile sentenced for offences in 2016
These are the consequences of court backlogs

This, and I say this advisedly, is an idiotic decision by @ShabanaMahmood.
We have record backlogs and record delays in the Crown Courts.
It takes 5 years for rape cases to come to trial. And the backlog is growing.
And the government is *cutting* even further.
Madness.
This government has inherited record backlogs and delays in the Crown Courts. Prisons are overflowing. Every part of the justice system has been cut to ribbons.
All undeniable.
However.
The decision to *cut* court sitting days is theirs. And is dangerously shortsighted. 🧵
