Protecting a player’s face from high-speed impacts is essential in field hockey, yet current masks vary widely in how well they actually perform under real-world conditions.

In laboratory tests replicating match-relevant ball speeds and temperatures, researchers evaluated commercially available field hockey masks using a Hybrid III headform to capture both structural responses and potential user consequences.

The results showed substantial variation in protective performance driven by speed, temperature, and impact location, including instances of mechanical failure and facial contact. The study also demonstrated a practical methodology using commonly available equipment that could serve as a dynamic performance test standard for the sport’s PPE industry.

Improving how field hockey masks are evaluated, and recognizing where current designs fall short, brings the sport closer to reliable, evidence-based protection.
