this reaction is killing me because yes this is correct this is literally precisely what the novel is about and (spoiler? i suppose) the thematic conclusion is inarguably that no relationship can survive under the all encompassing burden of colonialism lol
the reaction by certain people on here to "Taiwan travelogue" is odd to me because at a glance it seems to be a novel *about* the ways the invisible power dynamics of colonialism fundamentally distort human relationships. Not about how cool the Japanese occupation of Taiwan was

it's totally cool if people don't like the specific het pairings that have become published novels but i find that aspect less concerning than the fact that just 13 of the top 100 pairings of all time on ao3 are m/f but all the successful published novels that were fics are m/f
