To the students graduating in two weeks: I do hope the professors let us know when the ceremony is, so we can come and cheer you on! -Naomi Brown #whogetstobewhereSAV
to stay in their homes, to help provide affordable housing options - progressive policies are out there and our government hasn't been utilizing them, so I urge everyone to reach out to the local government and urge more progressive policies. -RM #whogetstobewhereSAV
I’m Ryan Madson, I’ve worked with the city as a planner and I’m a SCAD professor - I really love what the panel has said and I believe that Savannahians are really going to do right by themselves and come together - and we really see them rising up right now.
But right now, we're also seeing a lot of rapid change and development, with the threat of gentrification and people being pushed out. So I believe the City of Savannah really must meet the citizens halfway with some progressive policies that help longtime residents...
I’d like to introduce myself - I’m Detric Leggett and want everyone to know Holy Spirit Lutheran Church is a space for the community, for people to come together and make our community vibrant once more. #whogetstobewhereSAV
We just had the Georgia Poverty Summit and in it we really focus on teaching soft skills to the people who attend - so educating people in that way, not degree programs, but the soft skills that make people employable. - Rep. Carl Gilliard #whogetstobewhereSAV
We’re having a block party on Saturday, May 26th for Midtown residents to come out and get to know their neighbors…we’ll have Jiu-Jitsu workshops, food, and more! -JG #whogetstobewhereSAV
Question for Jimmy - do you know of any opportunities for Midtown residents to come out and get to know their neighbors? - Paulita #whogetstobewhereSAV
to not let people get pushed out of their homes or for boarded-up properties to get sold off to hotel developers. We need to help people access education so they can succeed, so they can pull themselves out of poverty. - State Representative Carl Gilliard #whogetstobewhereSAV
Good evening…hello to Ms. Brown, I am a product of this neighborhood and I remember in ’91 when we had 59 murders. We marched on the streets then - everyone came together, regardless of ethnicity. We need means to congregate, to hold city and state officials accountable...
Well, we do know that people have said “When SCAD came to Savannah…the rent went way up, poverty went up” - but how much of a factor is that? I see a State Rep in the room - Carl Gilliard, what do you think? -PG #whogetstobewhereSAV
I’ve grown up on the eastside and for the past 5 years or so, I’ve started really worrying about gentrification. My husband and I bought a house and I’m worried about my neighbors being able to stay in their homes - even after owning them for 3 generations. - Bonnie
This is a time for us to learn each others folk ways, spirit ways, to share our cultures with one another. We want to engage people, to help them make their mark in their communities and to create an enlightened Savannah that way. -PG #whogetstobewhereSAV
Here’s an idea - go around and ask neighbors to write down the top 5 places they spend their money in Savannah. Then, go to the top 5 businesses and ask for their support for a farmer’s market, etc. - I’ve done this and it works! -PG #whogetstobewhereSAV
We are in a period of enlightenment. It’s time for us to get out of our shells and cross the street, to greet the people moving in & say “Welcome." You’re safer when you know who’s next door! I would challenge communities to join together as neighborhoods.-PG #whogetstobewhereSAV
Before working on the greenhouse project, I would have said the way to improve midtown would be more green spaces and getting kids outside. But now, I realize that leadership is truly what’s needed, to help people build understanding and trust. -SL #whogetstobewhereSAV
I would love to see more community policing. It would also be great to map the cultural influences of an area to really bring the area to life and encourage people to share with one another. -PG #whogetstobewhereSAV
