But I keep coming back to: why would anyone think handing a screen connected to the whole world with no rules or restrictions would be a good thing for kids/tweens/teens???

I remember reading a number of news articles back in the day that basically said that the people who created social media apps and various games wouldn’t let theirs kids use them. That’s was enough for me - my daughter had no access to such things as a result. She only was allowed Insta when she went to college (and still not Snap).

Luckily, she found her right uni. Other schools are just starting to ban technology in the classroom, her uni has all along. Kids there make conversation. About the homework. She’s in paradise.

I honestly don’t understand how parents have let this happen? My daughter has only now been allowed social media of any kind because she went off to uni. Her phone has always had time limits on apps, etc. But she was the only one she knew of at her secondary school with a locked down, monitored phone.

That said, I did, sort of learn my lesson the hard way with my first book. If the acquisions team for a potential publishing house is traumatised by the first chapter, it's not likely to sell well... I might have free "reign" as an author, but so do readers, when they opt not to read something.
