https://t.co/EXcRjBMpTJ was set to move into a new office in August, but our lease was revoked. This was due to discrimination from the landlord aimed at our formerly incarcerated staff and community.

In the words of our Executive Director Marlon Chamberlain, “[The landlord] was aware we were a mission-driven organization, but when it clicked that our team is comprised of formerly incarcerated individuals, his tone shifted. He asked if we would have ‘inmates freshly released roaming around his building.’[…]the stigma he projected, the assumption that our presence is inherently dangerous or unwelcome is exactly the kind of systemic bias we fight against every day.
We were denied a lease based on prejudice, not policy.”

Ending Permanent Punishments isn’t just about changing policy; we also aim to change the narrative and preconceived ideas about formerly incarcerated people. These prejudices have real world consequences that we refuse to ignore.

The 15th annual Formerly Incarcerated Convicted People & Families Movement (FICPFM) Regional Convening was this past weekend!🔥
FICPFM brings together directly impacted leaders, organizers, and advocates to discuss how we can continue to use our collective power to make change. We all came together, from across the Midwest, to remind ourselves of the importance of our work and to network with the organizations that aid in our mission of ending permanent punishments.
The speakers discussed a range of topics including reentry, grief, reparations, and more. We left with strategies and realizations that will influence the work we do every day for formerly incarcerated people!

This is why we celebrate July 3rd as Formerly Incarcerated Person’s (FIP) Independence Day. This day is about reclaiming a future that was promised to us then barred from us.
