A free-flowing panel discussion here at the National Retrofitting Conference #RetrofittingIreland on the future outlook of the National Retrofitting Programme, where we are hearing the perspectives of expert stakeholders in the public, private and third sectors.

He says that grants will not be enough to incentivise the 53% of homeowners for whom retrofitting is either not of interest, or for whom it is a pipedream. #RetrofittingIreland

However, she says that the projects have made a considerable contribution to the climate goals of the Council, reduced operating and running costs, increased average BER ratings from E1 to A3, and made housing more attractive for Council's rightsizing policy.
Catherine Keenan of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council gives an overview of successful retrofit projects which have taken place in Dún Laoghaire. #RetrofittingIreland
She says that there were challenges in retrofitting homes with tenants in situ, rolling out district heating systems, convincing people of the merits of retrofits, health and safety challenges on site, and communications which required an on site project manager.
They also say that C rated dwellings perform reasonably in terms of both comfort and cost, meaning that a homeowner living in a C rated dwelling may not be as motivated to upgrade as say a homeowner living in a poorly performing G rated dwelling
Dr. Ciara Ahern and Elihu Essien-Thompson from Technological University Dublin give an overview of the thermal refurbishment of the Irish housing stock, discuss whether the retrofit targets will be met, and outline the key challenges facing the sector. #RetrofittingIreland
They state that older apartments are comparing less favourably to new “high standard” apartments with time. This could lead to the older apartment stock becoming stranded assets and we need to consider ways to bring this typology with us.
