While much work remains this is key step in addressing the inequities that disproportionately impact marginalized communities and Indigenous peoples. To learn more about the bill and what is next check out: https://t.co/CG06vRKUyH
Last week advocates led by @ingrid_waldron achieved a collective victory for environmental justice. The passage of Bill C-226 means Canada will now have to develop “a national strategy to assess, prevent and address environmental racism and to advance environmental justice.”
@ingrid_waldron Great news! Today @ConversationCA posted our op-ed about how vital this bill is to address environmental racism and promote environmental justice: https://t.co/i33oD7djGP
This morning, the environmental racism Bill C-226 moved through clause-by-clause consideration in the Senate Environment committee in record time. Consideration concluded in under 5 minutes without a single amendment. Off to report stage!
🇨🇦 recently recognized the R2HE for the 1st time in federal law. The gov't will be spending the next year consulting on how this right should be applied and interpreted. Organizations like ours, will be pushing to ensure the right is not water-downed and is protected. #R2HE 2/2
Stories like this one raise the question what can be done when pollution puts communities at risk? In Costa Rica, citizens have used the right to the healthy environment (R2HE) to bring successful legal challenges against polluters 1/2. https://t.co/h88M8WujYX
Bill C-226 would require the federal government to establish a strategy to assess, prevent and address environmental racism. The House passed Bill C-226 in March 2023, but the Senate still needs to approve it before it becomes law. Be part of the push for this much needed bill.

But there are opportunities to address these gaps. Over the next two years, the gov't will be consulting on a framework setting out the “reasonable limits” the right will be subject to. Your voice and advocacy will be needed more than ever during this time.

Today MPs passed #BillS5. This is the 1st major update to 🇨🇦's most important environmental law in two decades and the first time the right to a healthy environment has been recognized in federal law, but there is a catch.... https://t.co/wxkis6RBqg
“Allowing government to impose or influence limitations on this right will mean that economic development can take priority over the health of Canadians, if the price is right. In practice, this results in disproportionate impacts on BIPOC communities.” @ingrid_waldron
Thank you to @Laurel_BC and @ElizabethMay for your efforts to strengthen #S5 and highlighting its gaps, including its failure to provide a mechanism to enforce the right to a healthy environment or establish national air quality standards. Our work is just beginning #fixCEPA
Bill #S5 was in Parliament today on route to a final vote. #S5 is imperfect, but would update 🇨🇦's primary law on toxins, including: recognising the right to a healthy environment & requiring consideration of cumulative effects and the effect of toxins on vulnerable populations.
We are calling on MPs to pass Bill S-5 without delay when it returns to the House. The status quo is no longer tenable. Communities and families deserve clean air, water, and soil. We all deserve the right to a healthy environment upheld! #ENVRights

This spring the CAD gov't has an opportunity to fix the primary law on toxins and pollution. Bill S-5, would finally modernise CAD's regulation of harmful substances, and recognize the right to a healthy environment - for the 1st time in federal law. #FixCEPA
