“Those who backed Ms Leadbeater's original Bill could use the Parliament Act to bypass the Lords if they can get another MP to take it through the Commons again. Yet this would be in the face of voters' opposition… [A new mega-poll] showed a majority in every single British constituency do not want their MP to support a law pushed through Parliament without full scrutiny by both Houses.”

I know many constituents are concerned by reports that the Assisted Dying Bill could return to Parliament.
My position remains unchanged.
My full statement is below 👇🏿
Now that is quite remarkable! Simon Opher MP today says the Leadbeater Bill is 'excellent' but in September told the BMJ that key questions still needed to be resolved. Falconer said similar but then tabled 77 amendments.
❗@JimAllister questions whether some of those Members of Parliament campaigning so vociferously against the House of Lords for its scrutiny of the assisted suicide Bill would be doing so if Peers were "blocking" legislation that they didn't like.
It was great to support everyone down in Rochester to make the message loud and clear that disabled people do not want to return of the failed assisted suicide bill with @OtherHalfOrg

🤩 @JimAllister slams MPs for their attack on the House of Lords for simply doing its job in scrutinising legislation. It is not the House's fault that the assisted suicide Bill failed; it is simply the fault of bad legislation.
📢 Liam Conlon MP (@LiamConlon2) states that the number of amendments tabled to the assisted suicide Bill "demonstrated the inadequacies of the Bill", making it clear that it was wholly reasonable for it to fail.
🗣 SAY IT LOUDER!
Liam Conlon MP (@LiamConlon2) reminds us that no organisations representing people with disabilities supported the assisted suicide Bill. It would place these individuals in real danger.
So only 0.16% (about 1 in 600) of the UK population asked for this debate?
Not very democratic.
But the debate made it clear that
-peers were right to scrutinise a deeply flawed bill
-pushing through the previous (even worse) bill won't work.
-the govt won't give it time
The Hansard Society has made it clear that the House of Lords has every authority to act as it did with regard to the assisted suicide Bill, @JimShannonMP reminds us.
Supporters of the Bill are now simply throwing their toys out of the pram.
💯 Using the Parliament Acts to force a highly controversial Private Members' bill into law sets a dangerous precedent, whereby any Government could effectively bypass scrutiny and force whichever laws onto the statute books that it wished, warns @Meg_HillierMP.
