Took in a cabaret show on Printer’s Row in Nashville. Painted New York City with the baby Bows. Went to Washington DC one summer week when it was too hot to breathe.
“We have been lucky. Mom, you would like Tacoma. I miss you already.”
Sketchbook journal marking the anniversary of my mom’s death.
Facebook served me pictures of the day, four years ago, that I visited the Chihuly glass footbridge in Tacoma, Washington, during the Pacific Northwest bookseller’s conference.
I wrote: “Mom has often joined me on these trips to support my books – she is so proud.
“We have had moonshine and seen the bats in Austin, had steak and seen the mountains in Banff. Been to Granville Island’s wonderful market. Moose Jaw’s incredible library.
Sketchbook diary page with no words on it. Monarchs are gathering here - milkweed, goldenrod, and the first asters in bloom. The neighbourhoid kids went back to school this week. The season starting to turn.
#sketchbookdiary recap of WITCHWARD BOUND launch day on September 1st.
Not half a patch on the wonderful illos by Kelly Murphy — Butter looks like one of those weird medieval manuscript cats. But I do like the grape juice sea and the pea green boat.
@porterairlines I asked Porter to cover the cost of the rental car, but they don’t do that.
I worked on alternates for six solid hours, but then had to cancel the whole thing. I went to bed in tears.
Why I am not in Newfoundland.
I got invited to a home-brew writing retreat in Newfoundland. I dothetrd over the cost and the timing but said yes.
And yet, I am not in Newfoundland. Here is why.
@porterairlines That, the keen observer will note, would have left me stranded in Deer Lake, five hours away from where I needed to be. I couldn’t ask three people to hang out at the Deer Lake Airport motel, and I couldn’t afford a rental car on my own account.
I love my garden, even if my cancer treatments + travel + construction led to it being entirely neglected for four solid months. Most of it now needs to be hacked back with a machete.
But the water lilies are as always too perfectly beautiful to take seriously.
Last year the stars aligned and I was able to join EK Johnston’s home-brew writing retreat on Lake Muskoka.
This year, I got to go back.
Big things happen at these retreats.
People start dream projects, toss dead weight projects away, read a stack of books after a year of drought, see meteors, finish chapters, or come to appereciate the genius of Trash King Arthur.
For me, it has twice been the place where I go: yeah. I am a writer.
Another #sketchbookdiary page. Our Muskoka retreat included two American writers (and me, but after 25 years of dual citizenship I assimilated-ish) and it’s always fun to make someone try ketchup potato chips for the first time.
