At Marine Protected Area (MPA) Torre Guaceto, marine protection and small-scale fishing go hand in hand.
The key is co-management: fishers, scientists, MPA managers and public authorities shaping the rules together and sharing responsibility for healthy seas.
By helping protect marine resources, the small-scale fishers authorised to fish in the MPA also safeguard the livelihoods that depend on them. Their knowledge and involvement are essential to making protection work.
Stronger biodiversity. More resilient fisheries. A future built together.
This is a model Europe can learn from.
🏆Proud that the EU-funded RESPONSE project got a well-deserved Black Sea Project Award!
The project, together with Black Sea SIERRA, is developing tools to help authorities respond more effectively to war-induced pollution threats.

Climate change is reshaping our seas and putting coastal communities, jobs and livelihoods under growing pressure. Europe must turn scientific knowledge into political action.
Today in Lecce, at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) Symposium my message is clear: ocean observation must be treated as permanent public infrastructure. We need sustained investment, reliable data and cooperation across borders.
Impressed by the work of CMCC and its President Antonio Navarra for ensuring reliable, rigorous, and timely scientific results that stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop science-driven adaptation and mitigation policies in a changing world.
The Mediterranean can only be observed as one sea.
Through OceanEye, we are mobilising a global effort to strengthen ocean observation so we can anticipate risks, protect our coasts and build a more resilient blue economy.
Science gives us the evidence. Politics must deliver the response.
How can we make fishing safer and it easier for fishers to work across the EU?
We’re asking for views on possible common EU standards for training and certification.

Εurope’s fisheries need support to modernise, adapt and compete — while keeping our seas productive for the future.
At today’s #AGRIFISH Council, we focused on the choices ahead:
➡️ a strong and sustainable framework for fisheries in the 2028–2034 EU budget. We take note of the efforts by the Irish presidency that led the Council to reach a Partial General Approach.
It was my responsibility to highlight the Commission’s concerns on the text.
➡️ simpler, more flexible #EMFAF support including for fleet modernisation and the energy transition. Our targeted EMFAF amendment is designed to turn that principle into practical support: less complexity, better access to funding and more tools for fishers and aquaculture producers.
➡️ defending EU fishing interests in the 2027 North-East Atlantic consultations.
➡️ strengthening Europe’s fisheries globally through our upcoming Vision 2040.
The sector is under pressure. Europe must help it modernise, invest and remain sustainable, competitive and resilient.
Good exchanges today in the margins of the #AGRIFISH Council in Brussels with 🇫🇷@CathChabaud, 🇭🇷 @david_vlajcic, 🇮🇹@FrancescoLollo1 and 🇩🇰 Maria Reumert Gjerding.
We focused, among others, on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028 -2034 for #fisheries, the need for fleet modernisation, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) priorities, the fishing opportunities under the WestMed and the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) amendment proposal.
One main takeaway: 🇪🇺 fisheries need investment, resilience and a level playing field.
We are working for competitive fisheries, thriving coastal communities and a healthy ocean.
What if we could spot threats to our waters before they become bigger problems?
From smart sensors to digital models, these EU-funded projects are helping scientists and communities detect pollution, track biodiversity and guide restoration.
