What is a good story? How do you be a good journalist? It's often hard for student journalists to find their way, and carve a space for themselves, in a complex media industry; I had a chat with a student about this and thought I'd share because it might be useful for others. 1/
I'm old enough to remember when a needle in a🍓was the lead news story for days on end, w/ saturation pressers from an angry Scott Morrison. New laws were written. The fruit-needle perp was even called a 'terrorist'. Women matter much less it seems. #auspol#EnoughIsEnough#MVAW
“Being a woman is scary, period. But race intersects with gender to make Asian women experience violence in unique, disproportionate ways... the women killed in Atlanta occupied other intersections that made them even more vulnerable.”
"That Long saw those he killed not as humans with lives and people who loved them, but as 'temptations' that needed 'eliminating' speaks to a centuries-old intersection of xenophobia and the hypersexualization of Asian women," writes @mmpandika. https://t.co/Y0RlBAd2dr
Men: consent is so complicated!
Women: it’s not just ask
M: How are we supposed to know?
W: ask us
M: what if she changes her mind!?
W: ask us
M: what if she’s quiet & I’m not sure!?
W: ask us
M: if she’s too drunk to answer?
W: then you can’t ask us
Cops: ok fellas, how’s this?
I've been thinking about the "good guy" trope today.
I messaged the guy who sexually assaulted me and he responded by saying: "But I'm a good guy."
And this is how men defend each other too.
If you commit violence against women, you aren't a good guy.

Women don’t come forward about sexual assault for one very good reason. They see what happens to those that do. No matter what those in power say in public, patriarchy wins by keeping women silent & afraid. #EnoughIsEnough#March4Justice
“On the weekend I will go and see some turtles” and the sentences that follow in @bri_lee_writer’s Eggshell Skull are so painfully validating. This is a book that’s been in my pile for a while, waiting for me to be ready. I’m glad I’m reading it now.

Accept Arthur Moses’ legal position but securing a criminal conviction in court is not the minimum standard to necessitate further investigation. Public office holders have always been held to a higher standard than not being convicted of a criminal offence. #4Corners
Today has been pretty shit, all round. Anyone else feeling flat?
I am just so tired. So sad. So angry. So exhausted ... for Grace, for Brittany, for women who found it all too much, for women fearful of speaking up, for all women, for my daughters, for my myself.
Just because you can’t remember it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Maybe it did happen, but for you it was nothing memorable; nothing out of the ordinary. It was just another manifestation of your inability to see women as anything other than objects at your disposal. #auspol
There are women I speak to who’ve worked in politics who are really struggling right now, really afraid. Afraid of what will be done to them if they speak out. I’m concerned for some. I’ll protect them no matter what, but it says awful things about our nation’s parliament.#auspol
