🌾🇪🇺 European agriculture on the brink of collapse
Geopolitical tensions, soaring input costs and increasingly severe climate pressures are exposing the vulnerabilities of Europe’s agricultural production systems.
During today’s exchange with Agriculture Commissioner @CHansenEU , Farm Europe called for a new approach: doing both short-term crisis management that is urgently needed AND at the same time buildling a long-term European plan for agricultural growth, investment and resilience.
This means supporting farmers’ cash flow, strengthening production capacity, unlocking investment, developing new markets and putting agriculture back at the heart of Europe’s strategic choices.
As Yves Madre, President of @FarmEurope, stressed: “The current growing seasons mark a tipping point.”

📊 As the @Europarl_EN debates the next #MFF 2028-2034, the numbers matter, but so does what lies behind them : choices for the future of Europe, including the future of our food and our farmers.
Today, MEPs asked for an ambitious EU budget to deliver on Europe’s priorities, including competitiveness, resilience and security. Agriculture has a key role to play in delivering on all three.
Against this backdrop, @FarmEurope's CAP 2028–2034 Budget Simulator shows the concrete implications of the choices currently on the table : the initial proposal from the @EU_Commission is unsustainable for the EU farming sector. It would lead to a massive restructuration of the EU agricultural sector and accelerate the loss of agricultural sovereignty.
With the negotiators trying to create a momentum to try to conclude in December, understanding the concrete implications of the different options is now more crucial than ever.
The interactive tool allows to model different configurations of the future #CAP, from the size of the ring-fenced CAP envelope and Member State co-financing to the allocation of funds across interventions, and to see how these choices translate at EU, Member State and farm level.

Good news for the climate & farmers engaged in carbon farming projects. The methodology proposed by the Commission is not rejected by @EP_Environment. While not perfect this certification framework provides a first basis for moving forward, which can be improved step by step as the Commission should come back with an update of #CRCF.
🚜📈 Europe’s food sovereignty is under pressure.
The latest @FarmEurope Sustainability and Sovereignty Radar reveals a mixed picture: while environmental indicators continue to improve, Europe’s traditional agricultural strengths are eroding.
Europe remains a major agricultural power, but declining trade surpluses, falling farm incomes and the continued loss of farms are narrowing its production capacity.
At the same time, progress in areas such as emissions, pesticide use and biogas production shows that positive transitions are underway. 🌱
The challenge now is to rebuild Europe’s productive capacity while pursuing a sustainable transition.

Europe wants to be sovereign. But what about its food? 🌾🇪🇺
Today’s State of the Union speech spoke of a stronger, more autonomous Europe.
Yet Europe’s agricultural reality tells another story.
📉 4 million hectares of cereals lost
🐄 26 million livestock heads lost since 2019
🌱 1.4 million farmers lost
📈 +21% protein-rich feed imports
These are not just numbers. They are signals of growing dependencies and a weakening European agricultural base.
Europe cannot build strategic autonomy while turning its back on the sector that feeds its citizens, sustains rural territories and contributes to energy, bioeconomy and industrial value chains.
Words are good. Deeds are better.
Europe needs a clear plan for farmers — and a Common Agricultural Policy strong enough to deliver it.

What if public money could do more for public health?
Public procurement is one of the most powerful tools available to public authorities to shape healthier, higher-quality food systems.
That is why @FarmEurope and @eateurope welcome the inclusion of a specific provision on food in the proposed Public Procurement Act — while calling for greater ambition.
🍎 Fresh, seasonal, quality food should not be optional.
🏫 Schools and hospitals should be leading the way.
🥩 Short supply chains and minimally processed foods should be prioritised.
🚫 We need effective tools to address the growing challenge of ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
The scale of public procurement means that the choices made today can directly influence the diets and health of millions of European citizens.
The next step is clear: move beyond a predominantly voluntary approach and ensure that public procurement rules put public health and the public interest at the heart of food procurement.

From words to action on water and agriculture 💧🌾
Today, @FarmEurope brought the discussion on Europe’s growing water challenge to the European Parliament.
Against the backdrop of increasingly frequent droughts and extreme weather events, the conversation focused on a key question: how can Europe move from political commitments to concrete action to strengthen the resilience, productivity and competitiveness of its agriculture?
A big thank you to @CarmenCrespoPP, MEP, for hosting the event and opening the discussion, and to @LucVERNET, Secretary General of Farm Europe, for presenting our latest study and analysis.
We were also delighted to bring together @letiziamoratti, MEP; Gaelle Marion, Head of Unit AGRI B2; Adriano Battilani, Secretary General of Irrigants d’Europe; @cduroc, General Director of AGPM – Maiz’EUROP’; Claudia Albani, Coldiretti; and @JMCASTILLABARO, ASAJA, for a rich and constructive exchange on the challenges and solutions ahead.
The message from today’s discussion was clear: water management is no longer a question for the future — it is a priority for the resilience of European agriculture today.
Thank you to all our speakers, participants and partners for contributing to such an important debate.

🌱 What will it take to bring intercropping into wider practice across Europe?

🇪🇺 Less red tape, more clarity for European livestock farmers
@FarmEurope welcomes the @Europarl_EN AGRI Committee approach to simplifying the Industrial Emissions Directive (#IED).
The message is clear: cattle should not fall under the IED, and fixed capacity thresholds from the previous IED for other livestock installations would bring back much-needed regulatory clarity and proportionality.
Simplification should mean exactly that: less unnecessary complexity and administrative burden — without compromising Europe’s high environmental standards.
We now encourage the ENVI Committee and the European Parliament to support the AGRI position throughout the legislative process.

🚨 @FarmEurope regrets AGRI Committee vote putting the CAP's dedicated performance framework at risk
Today's vote in the @Europarl_EN's AGRI Committee is a missed opportunity to safeguard the CAP's dedicated performance framework and preserve the autonomy of the Common Agricultural Policy.
A strong, coherent and truly common #CAP requires governance and accountability rules that remain firmly anchored within the CAP itself.

🇪🇺📢 Strong political support for a stronger EU promotion policy.
@FarmEurope and @eateurope welcome the clear message delivered at the latest Agriculture and Fisheries Council, where 10 Member States, led by Italy, called on the @EU_Commission to reverse the proposed cuts to the EU agricultural promotion budget.
At a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty and increasing global competition, EU promotion policy is a strategic investment that strengthens the competitiveness of European agriculture, supports farmers, and helps European agri-food businesses access new markets.
We urge the European Commission to restore a promotion budget that matches the ambitions of this essential policy.
