While the continental average has hurdles, these African nations prove that gender parity in political leadership is entirely achievable:

🇷🇼 Rwanda: 63.8% women in parliament (highest globally!)
🇿🇦 South Africa: 43% female MPs
🇪🇹 Ethiopia: 41.9% women's representation in lower parliament

FEMNET, with the Open Society Foundations, the Collaborative for Gender Just Economy and APWLD, convened a roundtable on Feminist Green Industrial Policy, bringing together feminist economists, civil society and advocates to explore what a feminist approach to green industrialisation could look like in Africa and the wider Global South.

Speakers cautioned that green industrialisation is not inherently feminist. It risks repeating corporate-led, extractivist patterns unless it strengthens women’s collective power, asset ownership and decision-making, and integrates care policies. Agroecology, Indigenous knowledge and community-led cooperatives were highlighted as alternative pathways.

Key takeaway: feminist green industrial policy must go beyond tokenistic gender targets to transform how power, resources and care are distributed, centring women’s economic agency, decent work, care systems and community ownership.

Alongside the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, FEMNET took part in the International People’s Assembly, which brought together over 200 civil society organisations, trade unions, and debt and climate justice coalitions under the theme “From Debt and Domination to Justice and Liberation.”

The Assembly rejected piecemeal reforms and called for a fundamental transformation of the global financial architecture.

FEMNET co-curated and moderated the session on Gender Justice and Women’s Rights, exploring progressive taxation, austerity, climate finance and food sovereignty through a feminist lens.

Key call: governments must centre care in economic policymaking, finance care systems and redistribute care responsibilities.

Last week, FEMNET was honoured to moderate “Financing Gender Equality in a Time of Fiscal Constraint: Delivering on the Seville Commitments,” hosted by the EJR Action Coalition.

Member States, feminist movements and civil society took stock, one year on, of the gender equality commitments in the Compromiso de Sevilla. Spain reaffirmed its commitment to reforming the international financial system, guided by its feminist foreign policy.

Key message: moving beyond promises requires continuous monitoring and accountability, so commitments translate into real change for women and girls.

Last week, FEMNET was in Bangkok for the World Bank/IMF Meetings 2026, taking part in a series of events within and outside the CSPF.

At the Feminist Festival of Resistance and Alternatives, a space bringing together feminist movements, grassroots activists, researchers, artists, trade unions and social justice advocates to resist the impacts of war, sanctions, economic coercion and imperial interventions while imagining alternative futures, FEMNET and @ActionAid co-convened a session on Tax Justice, Corporate Power, Debt and Global Governance through a feminist macroeconomic lens.

Key takeaways:
▪️ Feminist movements must engage consistently in fiscal policy processes so governments mobilise and allocate adequate resources to sectors critical to the well-being of women and girls.
▪️ Fiscal policy must keep being linked to the social organisation of care, land rights and SRHR, to show how macroeconomic policy shapes women’s and girls’ lived realities.

Building these connections strengthens feminist economic justice and grows the Femonomics movement across Africa and beyond.
