FIDH (@fidh_en) offices to the UN in Geneva & New York | Bringing voices of #humanrights defenders, activists & victims from all parts of the world to the @UN
🚨In front of his family.
This is how Indigenous leader Juan Pichún was arrested in #Chile, just one day after denouncing the discrimination against the Mapuche people and the criminalization by the Chilean justice system before the @UN_HRC at #HRC59.
They want to silence his voice. Today, he is sadly in pre-trial detention. He is accused of allegedly being a danger to society.
He is being signaled, without sufficient evidence, of being the intellectual author of an arson attack on a congressman’s property.
The detention of a spiritual and ancestral authority like Juan Pichún violates international human rights standards, which require states to respect indigenous leaders and avoid deprivation of liberty when other alternatives exist.
In this case, the Chilean justice system could perfectly continue its investigation without keeping Juan and his brother Rafael in prison until the date of a potential trial.
Juan is the son of Lonko Pascual Pichún, who was unjustly convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Law and later acquitted following a historic ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
The persecution continues, generation after generation.
From #FIDH, we demand the immediate release of Lonko Juan Pichún and his brother Werken Rafael, and the full respect for the Mapuche people.
#China: “FIDH is disappointed by the fact that, once again, China’s government has used the UPR to rebuff international concern over serious human rights violations, issue blanket denials, and make blatantly false statements.” - @fidh_en oral statement at #HRC56
🇺🇳 Following the conclusion of the Interactive Dialogue with the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, ALQST and @fidh_en call for the release of detained Huwaitat tribe members, an investigation into Neom-related human rights abuses and corporate due diligence.
#Afghanistan: @fidh_en, @ARMANSHAHR_OA believe the current legal vocabulary is no longer sufficient to describe the oppression, segregation, discrimination of women and girls in the country, call for the recognition of this situation as gender apartheid https://t.co/RwTds0QYc5
Last day of UN #BindingTreaty negotiations!
States are holding an informal consultation to prepare the Chair's recommendations and the conclusions of the Working Group.
The stakes are high. A 🧵…
We @fidh_en & @omctorg deplore today's conviction & sentencing to 2 years in prison of @odhikar_bd secretary & FIDH Secretary General @AdilurKhan & his colleague Nasiruddin Elan. This is nothing less than a travest of justice. #FreeAdilElan

@cenidh@natayago This week at a #HRC52 side-event on persecution of political prisoners & #HRDs in #Nicaragua, FIDH's @natayago called for the 2-year renewal of the UN #GHREN mandate and for a strong international response to the systemic violations of human rights & crimes against humanity in 🇳🇮
#HRC46: FIDH is concerned over #China’s manoeuvre to shield itself from accountability for human rights violations in #Xinjiang & #HongKong. States should not participate in the CCP broader diplomatic strategy to undermine international human rights norms and UN protective role
