🚨Dear #Calgary…
Thanks for doing all you can!
There’s a critical consideration for everyone, please.
➡️Please COVER and frequently CHECK all water collection buckets 🪣 and barrels!
🐥Birds, 🦇bats and more can fall in and drown.
Let’s keep them safe! Hang in there.
@CBCNews produced a beautiful and moving exposition about urban #hiddenhydrology. Passionate individuals like Louise, John and Peter in Montreal; Amir in Vancouver; Michele, and most especially Helen Mills in Toronto are leading the way. Let's keep going! @ConfedCreek
For those of you who were intrigued by @jbernstien and @mle_chung's neat interactive story. We'd like to direct you to Calgary's version. @FOCCAssociation has been attempting to daylight portions of Confederation Creek for years. #YYC
They too have maps: https://t.co/WR9UhrHsZf
For the next 2 days @TruEarthLaundry is offering their Plastic Free Sale. Use the link on the Friends' website to purchase household items designed to be less harmful to the environment than standard products - and we will receive 20% of each sale. https://t.co/VUpyVt5lXu
We can only keep speaking for @ConfedCreek. It never should have been a stormwater outflow, but here we are. It's only getting worse with these severe rain events. Meaningful mitigation on @cityofcalgary land needs doing @lizettendp @rebeccakschultz @MichelleRempel#yyc#yyccc
A better headline and story would be:
“Flooding Caused by 1970’s Burying of Creek; City plans to open it again by 2025”

@CityNatureYYC @n_droo_yu_el@CalgaryParks@JyotiGondek@jasmine_mian The Enmax Legacy Parks Program fund was scrubbed, and the committee was disbanded just prior to proposed work on Nose Creek in Laycock Park in 2016. The fund has since rebounded and Council reviewed a recommendation that it be reinstated in 2022. Google link to the escribe doc.
@ConnODonWeather@LHKirkland1@ConfedCreek@cityofcalgary This is also the first time we have seen photos of water overflowing through the 10 St pedestrian underpass, so it was a major event. The City has installed water level monitoring meters at 14th St and 10 St, so they might share their info... #yyc#yyccc#Flooding
@ConnODonWeather@LHKirkland1@ConfedCreek@cityofcalgary It happens very quickly, especially during these more severe rain events we see now. Public safety is always a @cityofcalgary concern, but conditions can change rapidly. The man stranded in the mud in his motorized vehicle was in chest deep water by the time firefighters arrived.
What I am learning about @CalgaryParks is there is no revenue stream to buy land when needing to protect ecologically sensitive areas. I think it’s time to pursue local corporate collaboration to feed a fund for land acquisitions. #yyc#yyccc#yycparks@JyotiGondek@jasmine_mian
@kookacola1@LHKirkland1 Many Calgarians don't either. The @cityofcalgary called it a "grassy ditch" and "stormwater" for so many years, they lost the institutional knowledge that it is a creek. Take a look at how many creeks are also hidden in its catchment: https://t.co/s0Babiu5Gb #yyc#yyccc
@ConnODonWeather@LHKirkland1 I believe we saw you at lunchtime today. @ConfedCreek is very flashy, and very rapidly floods during rainstorms. @cityofcalgary is aware of this. We have not seen any people in danger before. Thank you for the footage, we are relieved there was a happy ending. #yyc#yycc#abstorm
