Abu Hurairah (ra) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“A group of people do not gather in a house amongst the Houses of Allah reciting the Book of Allah and studying it between themselves – except that tranquility descends upon them, they are enveloped by mercy and surrounded by the angels – and Allah mentions them with those with Him (i.e. the higher angels).” [Sahih Muslim]

Qurtubi explains in his tafsir, “The metaphor of those who recite the Qur’ān without knowing its tafsir (explanation) is that of some people to whom a letter comes from their king at night when they have no lamp. They are alarmed, not knowing what the letter contains. The metaphor of the one who knows the tafsir (explanation) is that of a man who brings them a lamp so that they can read what the letter says.” [Tasfir al-Qurtubi]
