Introduce the Slinky Test to your students to demonstrate the value of sentence-length variety. With their own writings in front of them, ask students to stretch and compress a Slinky based on how long or short a sentence is.

Independent reading is not about a level; it’s not about a certain number of minutes. Independent reading is that reading we do that helps us develop independent thoughts - not thoughts directed by anyone else.
I'm seeing a lot of questions from educators about how to talk about the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks with young readers. Stories are always the best starting place - and the good news is that we have really great books for all different ages now. (thread)
