California farmers and water agencies have spent more than two decades leading real Colorado River conservation efforts, which has helped save millions of acre-feet of water while continuing to grow the food that feeds our communities and the nation. This article explains how California’s collaborative approach is delivering results and why continued federal funding is essential to expand conservation, strengthen water reliability, and protect America’s food supply. California is facing a growing threat from invasive golden mussels, a fast-spreading species that can clog water infrastructure, damage ecosystems, and increase costs for both farms and communities.
After being discovered in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in 2024, water agencies across the state have been forced to invest in costly prevention and treatment efforts to protect water delivery systems and reservoirs. Read more in the Sacramento Bee opinion article, “California must step up to fight the costly golden mussel infestation,” discussing the urgent need for stronger prevention, inspections, and state support to combat the spread of golden mussels: https://t.co/Nh6POSWiZj

In California’s southern San Joaquin Valley, the Arvin-Edison Water Storage District is helping recharge groundwater by capturing river water and letting it soak back into the aquifer.
A new study shows efforts like this can reverse water declines, highlighting how smart management helps sustain farms even during drought.

California’s water system has been built over generations to keep farms, communities, and ecosystems thriving, but much of that infrastructure is aging and in need of repair. SB 872 is a critical step toward strengthening the State Water Project, improving Delta levees, and protecting reliable water delivery across the state. Investing in these upgrades helps safeguard farmland, jobs, and the food supply we all depend on.
Learn how this effort supports a more resilient water future for California. Read more from our commentary titled "Protecting California’s water – SB 872" linked here!

For 20+ years, Imperial Irrigation District has led on the Colorado River, voluntarily conserving 9+ million acre-feet since 2003, more than 2× California’s annual allocation.
The Imperial Valley relies entirely on the Colorado River to sustain more than 470,000+ acres of farmland, one in seven local jobs, and America’s winter vegetables.
As post-2026 rules are negotiated, the federal draft study is a framework, not a decision. A Lower Basin proposal commits up to 1.5 MAF/year in conservation, including CA’s 440KAF, but only with enforceable commitments from all 7 Basin states.
Durable solutions must follow the Law of the River, protect senior rights, and sustain food security.

"An equitable solution is needed to satisfy all water uses throughout the Colorado River Basin. Some parties want to ignore or rewrite historic compacts, acts, and water rights laws to achieve a solution that doesn’t involve their own participation. That is no solution."

Excited to read the State Water Board's Bay-Delta Plan update! The Healthy Rivers & Landscapes Program balances water for 80% of Californians, thriving farms, & wildlife with science-based solutions, compared to the disastrous flows-only alternative. Implementation with @WaterBlueprint recommended updates to operational rules & water supply investments will help ensure beneficial uses for all purposes. 🌊🌾🐟 #CAWater #BayDelta #VoluntaryAgreements #HRLProgram
