I just finished bingeing on Fauda, Season 5. This is one of the finest TV shows to come along, perhaps since The Sopranos.

This was a tough season to watch as it dealt with the 10/7 attacks. The violence was hidden, toned down, and implied instead of screaming the blood-drenched barbarity of what happened that murderous day.

S5 #Fauda is utterly brilliant, but harrowing in the extreme, even though the episodes dealing directly with 7/10 show only a fraction of horrors of that terrible day. The pain, grief and trauma of "Doron", "Captain Ayub", "Eli" et al, is only too real, no acting required.

Watching Fauda on Netflix brought back a memory I wish I could forget.

The horrifying scenes of civilians being killed on October 7 took me back nearly three years, to that morning when I woke up at 6:30 a.m. to the sound of rockets being fired from Gaza.

On my way to work, I saw an Israeli 4x4 driving through the streets with an elderly Israeli woman inside, while people around it were cheering. I was devastated and in shock. I wanted to do something, but I couldn’t. I remember thinking: “This is the end.”

That day, I posted a tweet condemning October 7.

I paid a heavy price for speaking out. Hamas made sure of that.

Episodes 7 and 8 of Fauda may be the hardest thing you’ll ever watch—apart from the actual footage of October 7, which many could not bring themselves to see.

Assisti à 5ª temporada de Fauda, a série israelense na Netflix. Essa sempre foi uma série desconfortável. Criada por Lior Raz e Avi Issacharoff, ex-integrantes de unidades israelenses, ela acompanha agentes infiltrados no conflito entre israelenses e palestinos, evitando quase sempre a divisão cômoda entre mocinhos e bandidos.
Mas a quinta temporada é uma porrada. Os episódios 7 e 8 recriam o massacre de 7 de outubro de 2023, e aí fica difícil assistir apenas como ficção. Acho que todo mundo viu dezenas de imagens reais dos atentados, muitas filmadas pelos próprios terroristas, que já eram muito impactantes. Mas desta vez a ficção nos coloca dentro do horror.
Eu fiquei realmente perturbado, não só por assistir ao massacre pelos olhos das vítimas, mas imaginando os atores israelenses, muitos deles judeus. A foto que ilustra este post é do ator Yaakov Zada-Daniel, que interpreta o agente Eli, no momento em que entra em sua casa num kibutz que foi atacado pelos terroristas do Hamas. É de perder o fôlego. Ele não estava representando uma tragédia distante. Estava reconstruindo diante das câmeras algo que atingiu seu país, suas famílias, seus amigos e a própria equipe da série.
Idan Amedi, ator de Fauda, foi gravemente ferido combatendo em Gaza. Matan Meir, integrante da produção, morreu na guerra. Talvez por isso esses episódios tenham uma textura diferente. Não parecem uma tentativa de imaginar o horror.
