On January 31st 2026, Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Recording Academy on behalf of their beloved father, Fela Kuti. This major win marks the first time in Grammy history that an African artist has been given this honor.

After Fela’s release, he promptly declared that his home would from that point on would be known as the Kalakuta Republic and used this experience as the inspiration for his next two releases, 𝘈𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘣𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 and 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘵.

On April 30th 1974 Fela’s house was raided by police and he was taken into custody based on allegations of hemp possession. He was subsequently imprisoned at the police CID headquarters at Alagbon Close.

While there, he found himself in a cell that had “Kalakuta Republic” scratched on the wall. Kalakuta is Swahili for rascal and “Kalakuta Republic” was the name the other prisoners jokingly called that particular cell.
