As if passing some bill will magically deliver Irish unity. If Sinn Féin wants it could help by issuing an apology to its victims and their families for IRA actions throughout the Troubles and admitting its campaign of violence was sectarian and divisive.
@Fiona_Forde_Irl I wrote An Irishman’s Diary in @IrishTimes on Monica de Wichfeld.
From Larne gun-running to the Danish resistance

What a gripping and terrifying story,, albeit with a happy ending
One of the most graphic descriptions of drowning
And such presence of mind in the midst of death

The Newspaper and Periodical History Forum of Ireland – @NPHistoryForum – has published (with Peter Lang) another essay collection, Freedom of Speech in the Press in Times of Conflict. https://t.co/sbxdF9AryB The theme of the volume remains, sadly, very relevant in our times.
99 years ago today one of the chief architects of the Irish Free State Minister for Justice Kevin O'Higgins was assassinated on his way to Mass. We acknowledge his contribution & reflect on his legacy of statecraft & democracy building. May he rest in peace.
This will be an eagerly awaited biography from @vincentbrowne who had a front row view of one of the most influential politicians in Ireland in the second half of the 20th century.
I am deeply saddened to hear about Ann’s death and by the news reports of recent hours. Ann generously agreed to be the inaugural guest speaker at the first annual Ceiliúradh Cois Life, our Annual Dinner for Pro-Life Education, in the Mansion House in 2015. She addressed a full house, ‘meeted-and-greeted’ and had everyone enthralled. People didn’t have to agree with Ann on all issues to see and respect her all-round honesty, integrity and class. Her defence of unborn children was exemplary. There was something of the light about her. Eternal rest, peace and joy to her now.
CHARLES HAUGHEY: GLORY, GREED AND GUNS, my new biography of one of the most influential, divisive and fascinating figures in modern Irish history.
Drawing on decades of reporting, political analysis and personal observation, I examine Haughey's rise to power, the controversies that surrounded him, and the lasting impact he had on Irish politics and public life.
A story of ambition, charisma, power and contradiction, this is an account of a man who helped shape modern Ireland. Out 22 Oct 2026.

Hugely enjoyable event for The People's Emperor at the magnificent @Hatchards last night with Adam Zamoyski. What a delight to talk about Napoleon III in a bookshop old enough that he could have popped in when he lived round corner while exiled in London.
Procol Harum’s Denmark performance of “A Whiter Shade of Pale” is regarded as one of the greatest live renditions of the song ever recorded. The band performed with a 72-piece orchestra and a 50- to 70-member choir. It has over 122 million views on YouTube.
Just received my copy of the July-August issue of @HistIreHedge which contains lots of great material on #USA250 including my own contribution on
‘Declaring Independence: America 1776, Ireland 1919’
