We ended the day by unpacking the critical intersections of household debt, the climate crisis, macroeconomic policy, and social reproduction! 🌍

When climate shocks and sovereign debt hit, austerity shifts the cost of survival onto households—relying on women’s unpaid care labor as the ultimate shock absorber. Real economic justice requires shifting away from debt-driven models toward economies that center and sustain life!

Unpacking these linkages showed why we cannot discuss macroeconomic reform without addressing the debt-climate trap and the care economy at its core!

A political economy analysis becomes explicitly feminist when it moves beyond basic market metrics to center unpaid care work, bodily autonomy, access to land, and historical power structures shaping women’s economic realities across Africa.

We kicked off the morning by reflecting on yesterday's conversations and the ideas shaping our collective work: strengthening systems to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls, reimagining resource mobilization for resilient feminist movements, reaffirming the vision of the African Feminist SRHR Charter, and recognizing that Comprehensive Sexuality Education is for everyone not just adolescents and young people

Day 1⃣ Wrap-up!

We concluded our first day at #AFMA2026 with an informative and grounding second session facilitated by Prof. Sylvia Tamale, moving from theory straight into the structural realities of how patriarchy operates in practice.

Here is what we unpacked to close out Day 1:
🟠Deconstructing Power: We examined the core definitions of patriarchy and mapped out its real-world mechanisms.
🟠Beyond the Binary: A critical look at sex vs. gender, actively moving beyond the traditional gender binary.
🟠The Division of Labour: Dismantling the public/private dichotomy and exposing the deep inequities rooted in the sexual division of labour.
🟠Decolonial Lenses: Exploring how patriarchy weaponizes intersectionality, using a decolonial framework to understand systemic extraction and control.
