“Agent Sprawl” sounds like something only IT teams should worry about.
But it’s much bigger than that.
So, what is Agent Sprawl?
It’s what happens when AI agents start popping up across a company faster than anyone can keep track of them. Different teams build their own agents, and before long, nobody really knows how many exist, who owns them, or what they have access to.
Why is this happening?
Because building AI agents is easier than ever.
Today, sales, marketing, operations, engineering, and even non-technical teams can create agents with just a few clicks using modern AI tools.
But here’s the catch:
Unlike traditional software, AI agents don’t just sit there waiting for instructions.
They can access data, trigger actions, send messages, run workflows, and even make decisions.
That means the risks are much bigger.
Some agents may have access to sensitive information. Others may duplicate work, increase AI costs, or create compliance and security headaches. In many companies, no one even knows who is responsible for certain agents.
So why not just stop people from creating them?
Because that usually leads to Shadow AI.
People will still find ways to use AI to solve problems, just outside approved systems, making things even harder to monitor.
The real solution is governance.
Organizations need clear visibility into every agent, defined ownership, access controls, approval processes, monitoring, audit trails, and a plan for managing agents throughout their entire lifecycle.
The biggest lesson?
The hard part of Agentic AI is no longer building agents.
The hard part is managing them effectively.
The companies that win with AI won’t be the ones with the most agents.
They’ll be the ones that have the best visibility, control, and governance over the agents they already have.
