Smt @nsitharaman inaugurated the restored 400-year-old Muzhiyan Kulam at the Government Middle School, Pooranankuppam, Puducherry.

Thiru K Kailashnathan (@LGov_Puducherry), Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry & Thiru N Rangaswamy, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Puducherry, were also present on the occasion.

For nearly 400 years, this historic water body was a vital source of drinking water, supported agriculture and provided water for the sacred rituals of the Sri Angala Parameswari Amman Temple.

Over time, neglect, silt accumulation and encroachments left the kulam unfit for its intended use. Today, after a comprehensive restoration, this heritage water body has been revived to serve the community once again. (1/n)

Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman today inaugurated the Public and CSR funded restoration of the 400 year old #Muzhiankulam water body at Poorankuppam, Puducherry, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Shri K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister Shri N. Rangasamy.

The renovation of the Old Light House is a good example of institutional collaboration and a ‘whole of government’ approach envisioned by Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi.

The National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures at IIT Madras conducted a detailed structural safety assessment. Their scientific rigour helped ensure that this nineteenth-century structure would remain safe and stable for future generations.

The Archaeological Survey of India provided expert guidance to preserve the authenticity and integrity of the restoration.

INTACH, with its deep experience in conserving Puducherry’s heritage buildings, served as the project consultant and brought sensitivity to every detail of the work.

The CPWD executed the work under INTACH’s guidance. (2/n)

Smt @nsitharaman addressed the inauguration ceremony of the renovated Old Light House at the CGST Commissionerate, Puducherry.

The Old Lighthouse was made in the year 1836 and has guided ships, supported maritime trade, and helped fishermen through generations.

With support from CPWD and INTACH, @cbic_india has helped bring this heritage back to life as part of Puducherry’s memory and India’s maritime legacy. (1/n)

The symbolism of a Light House is really powerful as its purpose is to guide, protect and serve the people.

Like a Light House guides ships through uncertainty, our institutions like Customs and CBIC guide trade through the complexities of a modern economy.

Their role in regulation, revenue, security and facilitation reflects the values of Duty, Vigilance, Service and Steadiness.

I remember an incident from October 2025, when around 700 fishermen from Vallavilai village, Kanyakumari were in deep sea and they did not have satellite phone connectivity. Incidentally, an alert was issued for turbulent weather and rough sea conditions.

When someone brought it to my notice, assistance was sought from Department of Telecom and with the support of BSNL, mobile network connectivity was restored within about 14-15 hours. The families who were at home got anxious.

The alert was then conveyed to them and this helped guide the fishermen to safety and brought immense relief to their families.

That incident reminds us that for coastal communities, timely guidance means safety. And the Central Government under Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi, stands for our fishermen community.

This Old Light House, rising above the Bay of Bengal, has stood here since 1836. For nearly two centuries, it has watched over this coast.

It has guided ships, supported maritime trade & helped seafarers.

A lighthouse has always stood for guidance, safety, and steadiness. For seafarers navigating the Bay of Bengal, the beam from this tower was a signal of safety.

The sea is beautiful, but it is also unforgiving. Those who live by the sea understand this better than anyone else.

Puducherry is a confluence of Tamil, Indian, French, maritime, and global influences. Few places in India carry such layered history with such ease.

The Old Light House also has a close association with the Customs Department in Puducherry. CBIC also maintains & looks after the historic Douane Customs building nearby.

Together, these structures represent an important part of the institutional and maritime history of Puducherry.

CBIC’s decision to restore this Old Lighthouse deserves appreciation.
