Researchers learned that despite improvements, most measures of wellbeing are significantly affected by continuing physical symptoms. Fistula care programs can incorporate systematic follow-up to ensure that women with continuing needs receive support. #EndFistula

There is little information about women’s wellbeing after fistula care. @UCSFBixby and @MakerereU surveyed women over 12 months post-fistula repair with validated instruments measuring physical/psychosocial health, reintegration, stigma, quality of life.

An important learning for fistula programs is that fistula care programs must integrate routine #GBV screening/referral, with reintegration plans assessing GBV context. A gender equity lens may strengthen both fistula and GBV prevention strategies.

An analysis of DHS surveys by FC+ and @DHSprogram found that women who report fistula symptoms also have significantly increased risk of experiencing physical and/or sexual violence, including within last 12 months.

From this research, we learned that:
1.) multi-channel interventions can mitigate barriers of stigma, literacy, and access & link many women to fistula care for the first time;
2.) fistula information and referral can be integrated into existing community & facility platforms.

Many women with fistula are not reached through conventional approaches. A research to action partnership with @popcouncil designed and evaluated an intervention for screening and referral via mass media, a hotline, health posts, and community agents.
