The position that triples is rarely the one that felt good the whole time.
It is usually the one that did nothing for two years while everything else in the portfolio was moving. The one that got questioned at every family dinner. The one that got compared unfavorably to whatever was hot that quarter.
Amazon traded sideways for nearly a decade after the dot com crash. Netflix lost 80% of its value in 2011 before becoming one of the greatest wealth creators of the next decade.
Patience is not waiting comfortably. It is staying invested through the period that was specifically designed to test whether you actually believed what you said you believed.
Most people do not have a research problem. They have a patience problem.
The retirement savings crisis in this data is real and it deserves serious attention.
But “is $1M enough” is the wrong starting question.
Enough for what?
$1M funds a very different life in Knoxville than it does in San Francisco.
A traveler and a homebody with the same balance sheet retire into completely different realities.
The number follows the life. Not the other way around.
Figure out what you actually want retirement to look like — then build backward from there.

The holy trinity of New Haven pizza — all originally opened in the 1920s and 30s.
Now they’re expanding. New locations popping up everywhere.
And the purists are losing it.
“It’s not the same.”
“The coal fired ovens can’t be replicated.”
“You have to go to New Haven.”
Here’s the problem with that argument —
A real comparison means sitting down with both pizzas, bite for bite, hot and fresh out of both ovens, at the exact same time.
Nobody is actually doing that.
So are we comparing pizza — or just protecting nostalgia?
