… Agency Urges Residents To Speak Up Against Unfair Trade Practices
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Community Development Service (CDS) Group, will hold a consumer empowerment campaign in Surulere on Friday, June 19.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the General Manager of LASCOPA, Mr. Afolabi Solebo, the "Know Your Rights" advocacy programme is designed to educate residents on their rights and responsibilities as consumers. He said the campaign reflects the agency's commitment to promoting consumer awareness, preventing exploitation, and ensuring a fair marketplace.
Mr. Solebo explained that during the outreach, the Agency’s officials and NYSC CDS members will engage residents, traders, artisans, and service providers on consumer protection issues, including the right to quality goods and services, price transparency, and the importance of demanding receipts and warranties.
Urging consumers to report unfair trade practices, misleading advertisements, defective products, shortchanging, and poor service delivery, he said the agency remains committed to resolving consumer complaints through mediation and lawful interventions while promoting ethical business practices across Lagos State.
The General Manager, therefore, advised residents of Surulere to participate actively, ask questions, and learn more about their rights and obligations, as well as to save the agency's social media handles and call numbers for any consumer rights violations.

LASG ORGANISES ONE-DAY CAPACITY-BUILDING FOR PROGRAMME MANAGERS IN IRON, STEEL SECTOR
… Urges Participants To Prioritise Health, Safety of Workers
In line with its mandate to ensure the safety of citizens, the Lagos State Safety Commission has organised a one-day capacity-building programme for managers in the iron and steel sector, urging them to prioritise the health and safety of their workforce.
The Director-General, Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola gave the advice at a one-day capacity building with the theme: “Advanced Occupational Health, Emergency Response Systems, Industrial Hazard Identification and Control in the Iron and Steel Industry in Lagos State”, noting that the industry is a critical sector that must prioritise the health and safety of its workforce.
According to Mojola, represented by the Technical Adviser, Mr. Seun Awojobi, safety is all-encompassing and hazards are everywhere, but they can be adequately minimised if organisations take cognisance of it and prioritise the health and safety of their employees in line with the global best practice to prevent injuries and fatalities.
While maintaining that safety is our collective responsibility and on no account should it be compromised, the DG stated that when management takes responsibility, prioritises the health and safety of its workforce, it enhances productivity, ensures longevity, builds trust and reduces liability.
Mojola reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure adequate safety of citizens, adding that employers should make adequate provision of necessary safety equipment and ensure enforcement of its usage to avert accidents, incidents and unnecessary sanctions or litigation, “together we can build a safe, secured and functioning economy”, he said.
A renowned safety and health professional, Engr. Jamiu Badmos who spoke extensively on hazard identification and control, and emergency response systems in the iron and steel sector, applauded the Lagos State Government and Safety Commission for organising such a laudable programme
He declared that management at all levels should make safety a core value, he said health and safety is not just a department, it is an attitude in which workers must come to work vertically and return home vertically”.
He disclosed statistics from the International Labour Organisation that 7,500 workers died due to unsafe and unhealthy working conditions, 6,500 died from work-related diseases, 1,000 died from occupational accidents and 2,000,000 work-related deaths per year.
He highlighted some of the key hazards, which include crane accidents, extreme heat of 180 degrees Celsius to 1,700 degrees Celsius, fire outbreaks, shock/ electrocution, working at heights, dust, noise pollution, horse-play, vibration, confined working space leading to suffocation and gas poisoning.
He implored management in the industry to ensure periodic evaluation of hazard control; artisans engaged for maintenance at heights must use appropriate ladder - not chair or stool, appropriate hard hat, safety boots, eye protector and reflective jackets must be duly provided for, periodic atmospheric testing for oxygen levels, risk assessment of hazardous gases before entry, standby attendant, emergency and rescue plans in a nearby hospital and compliance with occupational safety and health (OSH) Act, Lagos State Safety Commission Laws and other safety regulations, must be implemented and stringent sanctions for violations of safety standards.
He opined that organisations should implement monitoring, preventive and proactive measures, regulatory agencies of government should ensure regular safety audit, stricter operational procedures and unscheduled inspection of industries in the sector to assess the level of compliance with safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.

Sewage pollution is more than an environmental issue, it is a public health threat.
When wastewater is improperly discharged into our drains, canals, and waterways, it contaminates our environment, spreads diseases, causes foul odors, and contributes to flooding across Lagos communities.
Every resident has a role to play. Proper sanitation, responsible waste disposal, and reporting illegal sewage dumping can help protect our water, our health, and our future.
Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
💧 Clean Water. Safe Communities. Healthy Lives.

The answer is Freedom Park
Located in the heart of Lagos Island, Freedom Park is one of Lagos' most unique historical and cultural landmarks. Opened in 2010, the park was built on the site of the former Broad Street Prison, a colonial-era prison that once held inmates and political detainees.
Today, the space has been transformed into a vibrant center for arts, culture, history, and entertainment. From live music performances and theatre productions to art exhibitions and festivals, Freedom Park serves as a reminder of Lagos' past while celebrating its creativity and freedom in the present.

WBDD2026: LAGOS CELEBRATES BLOOD DONORS AS SILENT HEROES OF HEALTHCARE
… Permanent Secretary Urges Lagosians To Donate Before Emergencies Occur
… LSBTS Seeks Sustained Voluntary Donations To Bridge Growing Blood Demand
Lagos State Government on Thursday honoured voluntary blood donors as silent heroes whose selfless acts continue to save thousands of lives, calling on eligible residents to embrace regular blood donation as a civic responsibility and an enduring expression of humanity.
The call was made during the commemoration of the 2026 World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, with the theme, "One Drop of Humanity: Give Blood, Save Lives." The event brought together government officials, development partners, healthcare professionals, humanitarian organisations and regular blood donors to celebrate individuals whose donations sustain the state's healthcare system.
Delivering the keynote address, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Dayo Lajide, described blood donors as a special group of people whose generosity provides hope to patients facing life-threatening situations.
According to her, every unit of blood donated represents hope for mothers experiencing severe bleeding during childbirth, children living with sickle cell disease, accident victims and patients undergoing cancer treatment. She noted that emergencies occur unexpectedly and survival often depends on blood that has been donated before such crises arise. "The difference between life and death is often a single unit of blood donated by someone who may never meet the person whose life they have saved," she stated.
Dr. Lajide stressed that Lagos, as Africa's leading megacity and one of the fastest-growing urban centres globally, faces enormous pressure on its blood supply due to the influx of people seeking healthcare services from across Nigeria.
She challenged eligible residents not to wait until a relative requires blood before deciding to donate. The Permanent Secretary also advocated sustained investment in blood services, including reliable electricity, modern testing technologies, storage infrastructure, transportation systems, digital innovations and workforce development. "Blood is a public good. Access to safe blood should never depend on a patient's ability to pay," she declared.
She dismissed fears surrounding blood donation, assuring the public that the body naturally replenishes donated blood and that healthy individuals can safely donate three or four times annually. "We particularly encourage young people aged 18 years and above who meet the required health criteria to become regular voluntary blood donors and help save lives," she added.
Earlier in her opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, said World Blood Donor Day was an opportunity to honour millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors whose contributions sustain healthcare systems globally.
She noted that the 2026 theme underscored the values of solidarity and compassion embedded in blood donation. "From emergencies and childbirth complications to surgeries, cancer treatments and lifelong care for conditions such as sickle cell disorder, your gift is more than blood; it is a lifeline," she said.
Dr. Osikomaiya disclosed that the World Health Organisation had called for sustained blood donation and increased public awareness to ensure universal access to safe blood. "We appreciate one-time donors, but it is regular, sustained blood donation that truly saves lives," she emphasised.
The Executive Secretary commended healthcare workers involved in the blood transfusion chain and appealed to first-time participants to make voluntary blood donation a lifelong commitment.
