…Governor commends President Tinubu, Security agencies, Oyo Government for successful operation
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the successful rescue of schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on May 15.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed relief and joy over the development. He said the rescue, which came over 55 days after the abduction, is proof of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling insecurity and protecting Nigerian lives.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also extended solidarity to his Oyo State counterpart, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and the people of Ogbomoso, saying the successful operation has restored hope not just to the affected families, but to residents across the Southwest and the nation at large.
He said, "The rescue is a big relief and shows the commitment of President Bola Tinubu's administration to the war against insecurity. I commend the tireless efforts and resilience of our gallant security operatives who made this possible. I equally rejoice with the people of Oyo State, particularly the residents of Ogbomoso on this great news".

We have begun clearing the illegal shanties and market stalls built along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
As we rebuild the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into a modern 10-lane highway, we cannot allow its median to become a market, a settlement or a site for illegal structures.
There is absolutely no reason for anyone to trade, build makeshift shops or live on the median of a major highway. It is unsafe, illegal and unacceptable.
We often compare Lagos with some of the world’s leading cities and ask why we cannot be like them. The truth is that those cities work because people respect public infrastructure and obey the rules. We cannot expect a world-class city while refusing to show the discipline needed to keep one. Dumping waste indiscriminately or building illegal structures along our highways will not move us forward.
If we want a cleaner, safer and more organised Lagos, discipline and personal responsibility must become part of our everyday culture. That is how we build a city we can all be proud of.
Let’s test your Lagos knowledge. Here's our brain teaser for today...
"I am called a house, but I was never built for living. My occupants don't pay rent—they represent the people, debate policies, and make laws. What am I?"

Today, we join the global community in marking World Population Day, a day that reminds us that behind every number is a human story, a family, a dream, and a future worth protecting.
As our population continues to grow, so does our responsibility to ensure that every person has access to quality healthcare, education, housing, decent jobs, and the infrastructure needed to live with dignity. This day calls us to reflect, to listen, and to act so that government, communities, and individuals can work together to build a future where everyone has the chance to thrive.
In Lagos State, we remain deeply committed to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable megacity where every resident matters and no one is left behind.
We all have a part to play. By staying informed, making responsible choices, and supporting one another, we can help create a healthier, safer, and more prosperous Lagos for today and for generations yet to come.
Happy World Population Day!

The General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs. Adetoun Ibilola Popoola, on Thursday, 9th July, 2026, announced the commencement of activities for the Annual Tree Planting Day in Lagos State.
She said the 2026 edition, themed "Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility", is aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, increasing green cover, and encouraging residents to take ownership of the state’s greening initiatives.
Mrs. Popoola explained that the annual exercise reflects the commitment of the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to combat climate change, improve air quality, and create a cleaner, healthier, and more livable city.
She called on individuals, corporate organisations, schools, and community groups to actively participate in the tree planting exercise across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the state.
“Tree planting is not just an event. It is a responsibility. As we plant from Tuesday, 14th July 2026, we are securing a greener and more sustainable Lagos for future generations,” she said. “Let’s come together to plant, nurture, and protect our trees. A greener Lagos starts with YOU”.

LASEPA, ORORO WASTE MANAGEMENT TRAIN WASTE PICKERS, YOUTH, MARKET WOMEN ON USED COOKING OIL COLLECTION
As part of efforts to promote sustainable used cooking oil (Ororo) waste management, environmental protection and the circular economy, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), in collaboration with Ororo Waste Management, on Thursday commenced a two-day capacity-building training on Used Cooking Oil (UCO) Collection for waste pickers, market women and youths across Lagos State.
The training, which runs from July 9 to 10, 2026, is being held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja, and is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe collection, handling and proper management of used cooking oil.
A total of 23 youths participated in the first day of the programme, including Hausa- and Yoruba-speaking participants, reflecting the inclusive nature of the initiative and its commitment to empowering diverse communities with sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Speaking during the training, the General Secretary of the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), Alhaji Suleiman Adama, who addressed participants in both Hausa and English, described the programme as a landmark initiative of the Lagos State government, capable of transforming waste management practices in Nigeria.
According to him, the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria serves as the umbrella body for waste pickers nationwide, with the responsibility of organising, promoting and protecting their welfare while advancing environmental sustainability.
Alhaji Adama noted that the collaboration between Ororo Waste Management and the Lagos State Government, through LASEPA, has introduced waste pickers to an entirely new dimension of waste management beyond the traditional collection of plastics, cartons and metals.
He commended Ororo Waste Management and the Lagos State Government for pioneering the initiative, describing it as the first of its kind for members of the association.
He explained that the collection of used cooking oil would not only improve environmental sustainability and public health but also create an additional stream of income for waste pickers and unemployed youths.
The WAPAN General Secretary stressed that while the programme is still at its early stage, data generated from the project would, over time, demonstrate its environmental impact through the quantity of used cooking oil diverted from indiscriminate disposal.
According to him, awareness campaigns across markets, communities and neighbourhoods, coupled with education on the health risks associated with the repeated use of degraded cooking oil, would encourage greater public participation.
He also revealed that households and food vendors who participate in the collection programme would receive incentives and tokens from Ororo Waste Management, a strategy he believes would motivate wider community participation.
Alhaji Adama called for increased government support to strengthen the initiative by providing operational equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), transportation facilities such as tricycles and other logistics that would enable waste pickers to carry out their work more efficiently.
Participants at the training expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government and Ororo Waste Management for the initiative.
