Happy 250th, America! ๐บ๐ธ
This Independence Day, weโre celebrating a milestone anniversary and reflecting on what the American Dream really means. For us, it starts with something simple: everyone deserves access to healthy, nourishing food.
That dream doesnโt happen alone. It takes volunteers who show up and give their time. It takes donors who make our work possible. It takes staff who show up every single day, rain or shine, to make sure our neighbors are fed. It takes all of us, together.
250 candles on Americaโs cake, and weโre celebrating the best way we know how โ by feeding our neighbors and building a stronger community together. Hereโs to another 250 years of showing up for one another! ๐๐ฝ๏ธ

A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers from @BDO.USA for their generous service last week as part of their annual companywide volunteer campaign.
The BDO team โ including our board treasurer, Damon Desue โ volunteered at two locations: The Gathering at Scott Memorial UMC in Virginia Beach and the Bethany Baptist Church Mobile Pantry in Chesapeake. Their commitment to fighting food insecurity in Hampton Roads makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
We are proud to have BDO's support and look forward to many more years of partnership.โค๏ธ
This summer, your trip to @GroceryOutlet can do double duty. ๐
Grocery Outlet has launched its 16th annual Independence from Hunger campaign โ running now through July 31 and the Foodbank is proud to be part of it. When you shop at your local Grocery Outlet, you can donate at the register, purchase a pre-made bag of nonperishable groceries, or give $5 or more and receive a $5-off coupon for your next visit.
Since 2011, this campaign has raised more than $30 million for local food agencies across the country. This year, Grocery Outlet has also expanded its reach through a new partnership with Feeding America, making it easier than ever to support hunger relief at both the local and national level.
Nearly 1 in 7 people in the U.S. faced hunger last year โ including 1 in 5 children.
Together, we can change that, one grocery trip at a time.
Head to your nearest Grocery Outlet location and make your impact today.โค๏ธ
Virginia's legal community just wrapped up 20 years of fighting hunger and we are so grateful to be part of it!๐
This year's Legal Food Frenzy brought together more than 90 law firms, legal departments, and public agencies across the Commonwealth, raising over $397,000 and donating 10,500 pounds of food for neighbors facing food insecurity.
Since the campaign went statewide in 2007, the Legal Food Frenzy has helped generate the equivalent of nearly 28 million meals for Virginia families. With more than 1 million Virginians โ including 1 in 7 children โ facing hunger, this kind of community-driven effort means everything.
A huge thank you to every legal professional who participated, including local winners @BKBfirm, who helped make a direct impact right here in Hampton Roads. Your generosity fuels our mission every single day. โค๏ธ
Today we honor Juneteenth โ Freedom Day โ marking the moment on June 19th, 1865, when the last enslaved people in the United States were finally freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day of profound historical significance, joy, and continued commitment to justice.
We celebrate the enduring resilience, power, and strength of our Black neighbors, community members, and organizations who continue to lead the fight against food insecurity โ nourishing and uplifting those around them every single day. โค๏ธ
In observance of this important holiday, our foodbank is closed today and will reopen on Monday, June 22nd.
Summer is here and so is the watermelon! ๐
We have 56 totes of fresh watermelon in our warehouse, heading out through our partner agencies to our neighbors. That's a LOT of sweet summer goodness to share.
Big things are happening on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Recently, we celebrated the kickoff of the planning and design process for the future expansion of our Eastern Shore Branch in Tasley. This work is being made possible through a planning grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), administered by Accomack County.
We're also grateful to be working with GMB Architects as they help us develop schematic designs for the project and envision the future of food distribution on the Shore.
As plans take shape, we're exploring opportunities to create a more welcoming and efficient space for volunteers, improve office and distribution areas, enhance traffic flow throughout the property, and increase our capacity to store and distribute nutritious food for neighbors across the Eastern Shore.
Every step in this process brings us closer to strengthening our ability to serve the community today and for years to come, and we're grateful for the partnerships helping make this vision possible.
Thanks to an $85,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities, the Foodbank has a new 16-foot refrigerated truck on the road serving neighbors across Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. ๐ We are grateful for Publix Charities' continued investment in our mission to provide nutritious food to neighbors throughout our region. ๐
Our truck designs are intentionally simple, using a single word to communicate the values behind our work. Because these vehicles travel throughout our communities every day, they serve as moving reminders of both the need that exists and what is possible when people come together to help. ๐ค
Be sure to wave if you spot us traveling through your neighborhood! ๐
Today, we join so many across Hampton Roads in mourning the loss of Mike Arlo.
For 29 years, Arlo was a driving force behind the @1069TheFox and @FM99WNOR Mayflower Marathon Food Drive. Through his voice and commitment to this community, he helped provide millions of meals for neighbors facing hunger.
For us, Mike will always be part of the Foodbank family. Every November, one of our favorite weekends of the year was spent alongside him on the air and out meeting donors. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether you were dropping off a truckload of food or a single can, Mike greeted people with the same enthusiasm and signature thumbs up.
His positivity was genuine, his kindness effortless, and his love for this community was evident in every conversation. We will miss seeing him walk through the donation lines, thanking supporters, sharing stories, and making strangers feel like friends.
Thank you, Arlo, for three decades of friendship and service to our community. Your impact will live on in the countless lives you helped change. ๐งก

Yesterday, on World Hunger Day, we gathered with our friends at @PerdueFarms and First Baptist Church South Hill to recognize what nearly 1.3 million pounds of donated chicken has meant for families across our community this year. ๐งก
World hunger may be a global issue, but addressing it happens locally through partnerships, volunteers, food pantries, and neighbors helping neighbors every day.
Weโre deeply grateful to Perdue Farms for their continued partnership and shared commitment to healthy food access. Protein is one of the hardest items for food pantries to consistently source, and these donations are helping partner agencies provide more balanced, filling meals for the neighbors they serve.
Weโre also thankful for First Baptist Church South Hill and the many partner agencies across our region who are on the front lines of hunger every day.
A little friendly competition made a big impact for our neighbors facing food insecurity! โค๏ธ
Through the annual food drive organized by the Accomack County Sheriffโs Office D.A.R.E. Program, Accomack County elementary schools came together to support the Foodbank and collect an incredible 3,693 pounds of food!
๐ School Totals:
โข Accawmacke Elementary โ 80 lbs
โข Chincoteague Elementary โ 51 lbs
โข Kegotank Elementary โ 184 lbs
โข Pungoteague Elementary โ 452 lbs
โข Metompkin Elementary โ 2,926 lbs ๐
Thank you to the students, families, teachers, and staff who helped make this drive such a success. Every donation helps provide meals and hope to neighbors across our community!
