Can you build a community before you build a city?

@MrTimothyAllen talks to @TelamonArdavani of @JoinEdgeCity about pop-up villages, who pays for them, and what remains when everyone goes home.

“The salary is a bribe for you to not fulfil your dreams.”

@polycarpweb5 on work, dependence and why sovereignty takes more than holding Bitcoin.

“How long before the Navy shows up and shuts you down?”

@YaronBrook’s objection to floating Free Cities: Bitcoin has no address to raid. A city does.

We disagreed about how far governments would go. This is the difficult bit of seasteading.

Pay your taxes. Then pay again to protect your shop.

Paris police have advised shopkeepers to hire private security ahead of today’s protests.

If basic protection costs extra, what exactly is the state’s side of the social contract?

[Timothy Allen @MrTimothyAllen]

After visiting the first Zuzalu, I was pretty sceptical about pop-ups.

They’re starting to come of age now, though. Wide reach, real world results and proper business models.

I’m bullish.

What good is cheap electricity if someone else can switch it off?

Show sponsor @AmityAge is acquiring gas wells, land and infrastructure in Alberta to produce its own power for Bitcoin mining.

What makes somewhere worth putting down roots?

Lead sponsor @VeritasVillages is tackling that question through communities in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Bitcoiners called it again. A few months ago, Bitcoin was the canary in the coal mine.

Over the summer, the Bitcoin ecosystem was hit first: the Coldcard firmware exploit, emergency patches at Core Lightning, and a flood of AI-generated bug reports. The base protocol held. The weaknesses were in the software built around it, and the response was a volunteer red team pointing AI at hundreds of Bitcoin repositories and fixing what it found in the open.

This week the rest of the internet got its turn. PHP2Shell, a set of flaws that had sat in PHP for over a decade, was found with frontier AI models and patched on 21 October. PHP runs roughly three quarters of the web, and governments took their own sites offline while they scrambled to update.

Bitcoin went first because it is the biggest open bug bounty in the world, and anything with money attached gets probed first. Banks, payment rails, hospitals and government databases are next, and most have relied for decades on obscurity and slow attackers. That cover is gone.

It will probably be quite painful for a while. What survives will be simpler, tougher and more honest about its own weaknesses. Stress is how resilient systems get built.

Silicon Valley made the young founder an icon. Building a Free City might favour the person with grey hair.

You have to convince a government to let you try.

@patrissimo explains why experience counts when your startup is a city.

I've got @TelamonArdavani from @JoinEdgeCity on the podcast this Friday.

I've been on a long journey with pop-up cities. I thought the early ones had put me off for life.

I get it now.

[Mateus Freira @mateusfreira]

YES! Own your energy, own your power! Off-grid is easier than ever to setup. And it is a step towards your self-sovereignty.

[Fergus Hodgson, CAIA @FergHodgson]

"Alberta goes to the polls today on whether the province should begin the formal process of seeking independence from Canada. Tomorrow, @freecitiesfound ambassadors will hear directly from someone at the centre of the campaign."

What good is cheap electricity if someone else can switch it off?

That question cost us a lot to learn.

Paraguay. Ethiopia. Cheap power on paper. In reality, the switch was always in someone else’s hands.

So we stopped renting energy and started owning it.

I sat down again with @MrTimothyAllen on the Free Cities Podcast, three years after our first conversation in San Salvador. We didn’t do the polished version. We talked about:

⚡ What actually happened to our mining operations in Paraguay and Ethiopia
🛢️ Why AmityAge is moving into gas wells and power generation in Alberta
🤖 Bitcoin mining vs. AI data centres, and why the hype cycle is a risk, not a strategy
🚩 Why “I know the right people” is a red flag in this industry
🎓 Training Bitcoin educators from India to the Muslim world
🏝️ Próspera: what works, what doesn’t, and why a city needs families, not just digital nomads

Also: a basketball court, a Bitcoin logo, and local politics on Roatán.

The lesson from all of it: in Bitcoin mining, energy sovereignty is everything. Same goes for building a free city. If you don’t control the fundamentals, you don’t control your future.

Keep building. 🧡

Is owning your energy the ultimate form of self-sovereignty?

This week, @MrTimothyAllen and @dusan_matuska explore Bitcoin, energy independence and building Free Cities where families and small businesses can thrive.

I've always wanted to work in mining. Until that time I will have to live vicariously through @dusan_matuska. Hard work paying off. You love to see it.

Taking control of your energy is a big theme in this week’s episode.

Our lead sponsor, @VeritasVillages, brings that idea home: communities in Latin America with options to generate power, grow food and live more independently.

Thought experiment: If you're one of the first residents of a Free City, you're helping make it valuable. Should that earn you a share of the business running it, or is owning a plot of land enough?
