Burkina Faso just signed a $712 million deal — and neither France nor Washington had anything to do with it.

On August 21, the country's National Bureau of Major Projects signed a memorandum of understanding with Coris Bank International, a Burkinabè-owned bank, to mobilize 400 billion FCFA for health and education infrastructure. The plan includes four regional university hospital centers and 27 schools spanning preschool through secondary level, built for Burkinabè communities, funded by Burkinabè capital.

This isn't a loan wrapped in foreign conditions. It's not tied to a summit in Paris or a meeting in Washington. It's a domestic bank backing a domestic government's priorities — and the scale of the commitment says a lot: it's roughly three-fifths of Coris Bank International's entire market value. That's not a symbolic gesture; that's a serious bet on the country's own capacity to build.

Health and education have been central to Captain Ibrahim Traoré's government, and this deal is being framed as an accelerator to work already underway — hospitals like the ones in Gaoua and Dédougou reportedly progressing toward completion.

The direction is unmistakable: Burkina Faso is betting on itself to build its own future.
