🌍 Closing the Carbon Loop!

On June 24th, the #FUELGAE Workshop "Closing the Carbon Loop: Converting CO2 and Waste Streams into Scalable, Zero Waste Advanced Fuels" took place at #KOS2026!

With 80 attendees, we explored turning CO2 and waste into scalable, zero-waste advanced fuels. The workshop included a panel discussion.

Excited to share key insights from the European Biodiesel Board’s 2025-2026 Statistical Report! 🚀

The EU is leading the way in renewable fuels, with strong growth in both biodiesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). In 2025, SAF production (HEFA) doubled again, and new regulations like ReFuelEU Aviation are set to boost SAF demand across Europe. Major investments, such as the new 2G biofuels plant in Spain, will help decarbonize air, sea, and road transport—preventing millions of tons of CO2 emissions annually.

With over half of production based on waste feedstocks and a clear policy push, Europe is proving that renewable liquid fuels are a cornerstone of our climate strategy. Let’s keep driving the energy transition!

🎉 10 General Assemblies later, and the final stretch begins! 🎉

On June 23rd in KOS (Greece), the FUELGAE team gathered for our 10th General Assembly, officially kicking off our 3rd reporting period. It was hosted along the 13th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, KOS 2026.

We’ve made fantastic progress across all work packages so far. Now, we are diving into the most exciting phase of the project with several main tasks like:

🌱 CO₂ capture with microalgae in Advanced photobioreactors – Scaling up, constructing, and testing our pilot plants.
🧬 Microalgae biomass valorization through innovative fractionation technologies.
🍃 Advanced 3G bioethanol production to convert microalgal carbohydrates into renewable fuels.
✈️ Catalytic upgrading to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from microalgal lipids and biocrude.
♻️ Circular carbon solutions to valorize biochar and biogas to maximize resource efficiency.
📡 Smart monitoring (PAT) and 💻 Digital Twin – creating a virtual model of the FUELGAE biorefinery to improve performance and scale-up.
📊 Sustainability assessment – ensuring environmental, economic, and social viability through LCA and LCC.

✈️ Decarbonizing aviation requires a mix of technologies. But how exactly is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made?

Based on the framework by CENA Hessen and @ArgusMedia, here are the 4 main SAF production pathways at a glance:

🌱HEFA (Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids): Made from used cooking oils and animal fats.
Status: Highly mature; dominates the market today.
💨FT (Fischer-Tropsch): Uses CO2 and green hydrogen to synthesize fuel.
Status: Crucial for long-term scalability (e-fuels).
🧪MtJ (Methanol-to-Jet): Converts green methanol into kerosene.
Status: commercially available.
🌽 AtJ (Alcohol-to-Jet): Converts fermented alcohols (from sugars or starch) into jet fuel.
Status: Commercially available.

🌿 𝗙𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗚𝗔𝗘 𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗘𝗦𝗫𝗠𝟭𝟱 | Turning Microalgae into the Fuels of Tomorrow

We are proud to share that the FUELGAE project was represented at the 15th Panhellenic Scientific Chemical Engineering Conference (#PESXM15), held at the Technical University of Crete in Chania, Greece (3–5 June 2026).

Gathering between 200–400 researchers, academics, industry representatives and students, PESXM15 is one of the most important scientific events for the Greek chemical engineering community — a space where ideas on energy, sustainability and environmental technologies come to life.

🎤 Liakos Dimitrios, researcher at #CPERI/CERTH, delivered an oral presentation on behalf of FUELGAE:
