Ever wondered whether #sleep and wake-related neurons influence general anesthesia? Read what we learned in our new study:
Activation of Preoptic GABAergic or Glutamatergic Neurons Modulates Sleep-Wake Architecture, but Not Anesthetic State Transitions https://t.co/jV1bLOilmI
It's published!
In short, we found a preoptic mechanism that powerfully suppresses REM sleep (but there's much more):

I’ve been receiving some good news lately and will be hiring at all levels to expand the lab. Please get in contact if you are interested in reinforcement learning, neural plasticity, circuit dynamics, and/or hearing rehabilitation.

Coincidentally, 2-3 days ago, I remembered a presentation at APSS (when CD players were cool, for time ref.), testing if vestibular stim. in rodents increased sleep - no effect. It got me thinking about this interesting idea tested in the preprint. 👍
Whole-night gentle rocking improves sleep in poor sleepers with insomnia complaints. https://t.co/LUH2KLLQku
Maybe I'll start "My week's top articles"; if I do, this is this week's winner on my list! 👇
New article by the Michigan Psychedelic Center published in Translational Psychiatry- psilocybin induces acute reorganization of functional cortical networks in rodents. https://t.co/RbFGriXz6L

these recent breakthroughs, which give hope to parents, were only possible via nationally funded basic research.
https://t.co/drYoNFVA0n <- ID’d otof as ca2+ sensor (France)
https://t.co/XR1WG0N6Cv <-central ca2+ sensors will not replace otof function, must use otof (USA)
Just heard from a very good friend and expert neuroanatomist that the preoptic area is not hypothalamus.
Nonsense! Must be the water on the west coast. 😂
Since we're talking about funding of absurd research by NIH and other federal agencies, the funded scientists:
- watching flies fuck
- giving rats massages
- spending years digging into why jellyfish glow
- tracking penguin poop from space
- using horseshoe crab blood
NEW Preprint!
We show that preoptic glutamatergic neurons control REM sleep generation and their activation suppresses REM sleep rebound after sleep deprivation.

#Sleep and other Neuro friends heading to #SfN24, stop by Amir Jadidian's poster on Wednesday AM to hear about some (unexpected) sex-related differences in response to surgery.
