Two GSL All-Leaguers Propel Wins

Rogers slick running back #21 Mike Dorton rushed 25 times for 132 yards setting up 3 Pirate scores in a 15-0 win over LC.

Ferris' flashy wide receiver #80 Jonathan Parker caught 5 balls for 111 yards including the game-winning TD with :10 seconds left in a 22-19 win over U-Hi.

This Week In GSL History 1956

70 Years Ago

All North Central needed was some tough running and a timely defensive play to upset Lewis & Clark 12-6 at Memorial Stadium (Joe Albi). The Indians rushing attack was led by Ron Quincy, who had 22 carries for 128 yards & scored 2-TD's including the 26yd game-winner late in the 4th quarter.

Quincy's scamper to paydirt was the byproduct of John Derington's late game interception. Derington was able to grab the completed pass from the Tiger receiver's hands to give NC the ball and new life.

10 Years Ago

Mead traveled out to Central Valley and both offenses were clicking as the two teams combined for 884 yards of total offense.

But it was CV's fast start thanks to the running of Braedon Orrino, who prevailed in the 38-27 home win. Orrino rushed 34 times for 189 yards and 2-TD's, one of which from 60yds out, that kept the Panthers in a deficit most of the game.

This Week In GSL History 2006

20 Years Ago

The back-and-forth battle between Mead and visiting Coeur d’Alene had a little bit of everything.

In the end, it was the Vikings who rallied in the 4th quarter to upend the Panthers, 42–28. Cd'A QB Shea Vucinich threw for 173 yards, completing 12 of 30 passes, and tossed 4 touchdowns.

Mead was led by a powerful rushing attack. Chris Jones carried 21 times for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Luke Hattrup added 111 yards on 19 carries and scored twice. A wild one from start to finish, but the Vikings made the plays when it mattered most.

This Week In GSL History 1996

30 Years Ago

Mead's bruising running back #33 Scott McGlocklin rumbled for 179 yards on 26 carries as the Panthers defeated Shadle Park 37-7 at Joe Albi Stadium.
McGlocklin, the 214lbs battering ram, finished with a pair of short yardage TD's as the Panthers rushed for 312 yards on the ground against the Highlander defense.

University's running back #30 Tyler Carlson rushed 33 times for 185yds & 2-TD's in a 24-7 win over Shadle Park.

Ferris' wide receiver #84 Jared Karstetter caught 9 balls for 126yds & 2-TD's in a 24-17 OT win over East Valley.

The quarterbacks from Coeur d’Alene and Mead squared off at Joe Albi Stadium, and the result was an offensive shootout.

Viking junior QB #3 Colson Yankoff racked up 552 total yards of offense (403 passing & 149 rushing) in the 57-31 win over Mead.

Panther signal-caller Payton Loucks was 26-of-45 for 295 yards and 3-TD's.

In all, Yankoff accounted for all 8 of the Vik TD's either by the pass or run.

This Week In GSL History 1976

50 Years Ago

The Greater Spokane League is born and Spokane High School sports entered a new era.

The original “City League,” which dates back to 1922, was retired. The league had begun with Lewis & Clark, North Central, Hillyard/Rogers and Gonzaga, later expanding with the additions of schools such as Shadle Park and Ferris.

In 1976, the City League merged with three schools from the Border League: Central Valley, University and Mead creating a new 9-team 3A league.
