Victory for communities and environmental justice in Fiji!
Last month, Fiji’s Department of Environment rejected the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the proposed Energy-from-Waste Plant and Private Port Facility at Vuda Point, citing unresolved concerns over public health, environmental impacts, hazardous ash management, imported waste, water supply, road and port infrastructure, tourism, culture, livelihoods, and the project’s overall economic case.
This decision affirms the importance of lawful, transparent, and evidence-based environmental decision-making. It also recognizes the power of public participation from traditional landowners, residents of Vuda and Saweni, civil society organizations, technical experts, businesses, and members of the public who raised critical questions about the project’s risks. This victory was made possible through the collective efforts of the communities and advocates who stood firm in protecting Vuda, Saweni, and Fiji’s heritage coast, especially Zero Waste Aotearoa and Protect the Heritage Coast -Vuda, Saweni, whose organizing, advocacy, and community mobilization helped bring these concerns to light.
As the world faces growing waste challenges, real solutions must protect people, communities, culture, livelihoods, and the environment.
