Maybe it’s age.
A few years back, when Mummy would call to tell me my cow had delivered, I wouldn’t really care. Sometimes the phone would ring right in the middle of an important meeting. I’d have to stop everything to pick it up, only for her to go, “My son, how are you? I have good news… Ngabo has delivered a heifer!”
Back then, I would just hold my breath and go along with the flow, but inside, I was completely indifferent.
Lately, though, things have changed. Even if they call just to say a goat has delivered, I get genuinely excited. I find myself calling back every few hours just to check in, making sure the newborn is safe and doing well. I’ve even started revising my old vet notes just so I can be more useful.
What changed? When did I start caring for animals this much?
